Moving Antennas.....Tolerances?
I have to move my antennas (VHF & GPS) from the deck up to new hardtop. I will have one VHF each mounted on each side near the forward facing side-legs, so I know I have plenty of "clearance/tolerance" between the 2.
But a quick question....I want to move my GPS dome up near the starboard side VHF, so I can run the wire inside the same tube...... Any problems mounting it fairly close to the VHF, i.e. interference issues? Any minimum clearances to worry about? All it is is the small Garmin dome on a fixed Stainless mount (short). ![]() |

i dont think you will have any interferece problems. all my wires except my radar run down the same tube. i dont know exactly how close you are talking about but I have more "stuff" in a 2' x 5' area than the law allows. just make sure the heigh5t of the gps antennae is not on the same horizontal plane as your radar as the radar will fry it over a period of time. My back-up bottom machine (old apelco 465 pos) is on a weird frequency and I cannot run it without it causing intrerference in the vhf. My radar also causes a minimal amount beings its basically right next to the radar. anyways go for it,you can always move it back if you have too - the gps cable is shielded - make sure to run that ground to the ships ground if you do have interference (the tin-foil stuff)(i doubt you will have any problems) hope this helps- craig

I mounted 2 new VHF antennas and relocated my GPS today after work. Getting rid of my old cheapie VHF. Had the $35 5206 which served its purpose LOL. Got 2 new 5225 XTs with stainless mounts. Came out nice! My GPS I mounted about a foot forward of the Starboard VHF, so I could use the same hole to run the cable.....shouldn't be a problem based on what you said. Didn't think it would be but figured I'd try asking first. Garmin says in the manual that any VHF SHOULDN'T cause any or at least HARDLY any problem, so I should be fine. ![]() |

Eric,
Did you patch the old holes yet. I'm gonna do the same thing when I get my boat back from Jim. I was wondering what you used to patch the old holes before you gelcoat them? Another question. I'm trying to decide between a 3 side and 4 side enclosure. Are you happy with the 3 sided enclosure? |

You gotta remember, I dont slip my boat, so I could give a shit about blocking off the rear....for yours, you may want the 4th..... That said, I loved the ride with 3-sides....I dont like being closed in ![]() Last edited by 74Formula233; 05-18-2005 at 09:37 AM. |

Tony,
I forgot to answer your "old holes" question...... I patch old holes (above the water, LOL) with white 3M silicone....I fill the hole and then drag a razor blade over it a few times, and make it smooth out flat....does a nice job. I don't bother gelcoating. It's a quick way to fill holes and keep water out. ![]() |

Thanks Mon!
P.S. Do you still have the picture of Jim's beagles? Jim said you might have it, I guess he deleted it. I wanted to play a prank on my brother. |
