    Motor position on bracket

Trying to determine the correct hole position on bracket for engines on a Kencraft 235 Challenger. Found some info on THT about the light bow and bracket problem with these boats. Have added weight to the anchor locker per advice from several owners. Several have suggested raising the engines to get the cavitation plates up some. I know on a non bracket boat the cav plate is usually set even or close the keel depth. But on a bracket boat do you set them to the hull or the bracket depth????

I bracket some boats and every one is different..

when you install your bracket it should be done in the following..

    find center line.
measure over 13" on each side of center line.
measure up 25" on each one of the 13" lines..

make a straight edge mark across the top.. this is the top of your bracket. (this is your 25" motor height).

I will take in the facts of 1. what power and weight of and engine I am installing. 2. the speed , prop, hp and type hull the motors are being mounted on. 3. (this is the best part..) my mind wanders through years of doing this and I choose either to leave the engines where they are (work boat ) or raise them up (fast crazy people who need speed).. it is all in what you are doing..

I will add this also.. what the hell are you adding weight to your anchor locker for when you can tab the boat or just load it properly and tab down some?

when your full of fuel, tackle, people, water, beer and food .. stick your tabs down and load some weight forward in the boat ..

when you burn off beer (Yes a case of Budwieser is 20 pounds!) (don't ask me how I know!) , water, fuel and the people well you can tell them where to stand or sit to distribute weight..

you do not want to give up prop bite, or steering by going too high..

Quest thanks for the info, from what I have read all these boats with the bracket have a balance problem. The Kencrafts with the notched transom ride totally different. All the owners of the bracket boats say that adding dead weight to the anchor locker solved alot tof the bouncy bow syndrome. Keeping the foward 40 gal. fuel tank is a must. They were running - trim on the engines and tabs to keep the bow in control before the added weight. They claim only minimum tab now when running. Some even installed racing Lencos looking for more tab pressure.

The engine height has been a topic all the owners have brought up. I guess the engines mounted too low tend to dig and the cav plates are under water when running killing efficency. I haven't move the engines yet, just trying to get a handle on the correct position.

Standard is water rises 1" per foot of distance from the transom. As per armstrong brackets.

Thats not 100% on my rybo runner using these measurments
my boat will overheat, Im about a inch lower and it makes all the difference.

hey just one more thing to check .... and add to your equasion ..

make damn sure you do not have thru hulls, trim tabs, transducers, any type of obstructions on the hull before the engines it can cause air bubble trail / cavitation and make your engine run hot and screw with prop bite and performance..
