    Mooring whip tech

I have a place to keep my boat but it is bay front ( Ocean City Md Back bay) I have used davits, a cradle lift now when I am there I trailer down and have been pulling it everyday, does anyone here have experience with mooring whips? or a brand type recommendation, I know during a storm I would pull hewr around into a canal, just looking for something to keep her off the dock, Thanks

Alot of people use them around my home in forked river on the water. They work pretty good but if you are going to use them in a bay front scenario i would tell you to get a little large size so they are little more stout to hold off the chop and wind...

if it calls for a certain size i would go one up!!

Our boats are on a canal positioned about 300 ft from an open bay. We used to have a lot of problems keeping the boats off the dock until we spotted mooring whips at a boat show. We installed a set and were very pleased with the results. To be fair most of the waves come straight down the canal and there is very little side-to-side wave action like you may see on the bay. The wind, however, will come from any direction it feels like.

We got ours from Monarch http://www.monarchproducts.com/monarch.htm and they are 26 years old now. The only problems we have had were with one of the bases and that was simply due to corrosion, which I can accept will happen in salt water after that many years. They did a great job of keeping my dad's boat safe, even during hurricane Gloria. Today they're still keeping my boat off the dock. I probably should have gone up a size since my dad's boat was a 32 ft pilot house w/ no bridge. The extra weight and windage of the 36 ft Convertible is a bit of a challenge for them in high winds, but they still don't let the boat slam into the dock. It just slowly drifts in, sometimes touches the dock and then drifts back out.

You do have to get them set up right for them to be effective. Most of my neighbors have them and some of their boats kick around a lot, but they don't have the angles and dangles correct. It isn't too tough, just takes a little common sense. One of my neighbors has managed to leave the dock several times with a whip still attached. He's never broken a whip, only the bases. Granted, the base acts as a fuse, but I'll take that option. I'll look and see if I have any pictures and try to post them for you.

Monarch Mooring whips are by far the best out there. With some lag bolts and some cleats you are good to go.

They are made here in Bayville, NJ and any marina/dealer who deals with the distributor MESCO can order them, normally freight free unless something has changed.

Make sure that you get the correct size for your boat.

Make sure when you set your lines to have spring lines to inhibit forward and backward motion of your boat.
Those whips need to be straight off the dock. If they bend side ways they lose it.

Okay, finally found and scanned the pictures. Sorry it took so long.

Pic 1: Dad's boat. Very breezy January day. You can see spray from a wave breaking over the end of the dock on the right.

Pic 2: Dad's boat again. Hurricane Gloria. We had a single bridle line to the other side of the canal. You can't see it in the picture but my 17 ft runabout is tied to dad's boat, so the whips were carrying that one too.

Pic 3: Same dock, different boat. A lot more windage on this one. I probably should get bigger whips for it but these are working well enough and I've got other things to spend $$$ on, like fixing that battle scar on the bow.
