I have a 1978 Carver with a 260 Mercruiser. Engine replaced a couple of years ago but still using the original trim pump. Pump quit working last weekend. On inspection, found wire to trim limit switch was shot. Bypassed wire by pulling back to the bullet connectors and jumping the purples together. Pump still doesn't work. This boat has the 3 button switch with the top button as up, second button up/out, and third out.
When I press the up/out button the pump sit's and clicks, won't run. Pump failed when I was raising the outdrive.
Could use some tech. assist if anybody has any idea's.
While hitting the trim button up make sure you have 12 volts on the blue wire. Then hitting the switch down be sure you have 12 volts to the green wire. That year pump you may have a 2 or 3 wire motor. If its a 2 wire unhook the green and blue wires. Hit on to positive and the other to neg. and the pump should run one way. Reverse the wires and it should work the other way. The three wire hook the black to ground and then hit the other wires on one ant a time and the pump motor should run. If you get nothing the motor is bad and will need to be relplaced. We have good used pumps in stock for MerCruiser. You need to call and ask for Mike at (856) 785 9455. He can also help you with more troubleshooting if should need it.
I had a very similar problem with a Mercury outboard that had an external trim pump. Took the motor apart and there was a bad wire. Got a new motor and worked like a charm. Also had a solenoid go bad ... but you could hear the motor working in one direction. Given the "click" you hear thats most likely the circuit closing to energize the motor.... Sounds like the motor is bad esp. if both up and down get no response.
