Ran the 1000 and 1200 beasts just on temp jobs. I have heard some dirt that the 1000 for some reason is rough on trannies. Torque? The 1200 beasties ran a viking I played with for a week at a blistering 33 low cruise and 39 on the pins... Too knew for me to notice problems but for out of the box they were incredible. One tiny oil drop by the filter was all I saw leaking for the whole week.
I don't know that much about them but if you have any questions a friend of mine works on them out of O.C. and Baltimore. He's a great guy and from what I hear a pretty darn good mechanic as well. Let me know if you want his number.
We have the 8 cylinder 800 hp in our 1997 48 Ocean Yacht. We bought the boat last year with 1300 hours. When we went to survey we found 2 weak cyliders on each engine so we had them torn down before we purchased the boat. When they got the motors apart they found 12 of the 16 cylinder heads cracked betwean the valves. We bought the boat with both motors rebuilt and put 340 hours on it since and have not had any problems. They run great with no smoke and great performance at a light cruise of 1900RPM we are doing 29 knots and burning 51 gallons an hour. At a hard cruise of 2100 RPM we are doing 32.5 knots and burning alittle over 60 gallons an hour.
Great motors, Ran 54 bert. with 800's for almost 3 years very little problems, easy to work on and very quiet. The 800 8 cyl and the 1050 12 cyl are the detuned ones and the 1050 8 cly and the 1200 12 are smokers and only get about half the life. They are costly to fix we used Florida Marine Tech in Palm Beach. Great group of guys and know there stuff about MANS
Have the 1050 mans in a 50 viking. Nothing but problems! Injectors- oil pumps- leaks - fuel returns cracking. You name it - it's happened. Every year around peak offshore season - the shit breaks. This year we were down for 8 weeks.
If you can stay far away
I have to agree stay away if you can. They dont call them MANN-Grenades cause they hold up. I am a hull surveyor and if you are buying the boat I would strongly recommend an engine survey. I wont survey a boat with MANN engines unless the buyer will get an engine survey. To many times look god run good internally they had major disease. Im not sure where you are but i know a great MANN guy in NJ. Bmail if you need help.
