Can't say much about the issues with maintenance, but I get to fish on lots of different boats and have seen and used units from both. I would say that the Lowrance is better from a technical side but the Garmins I've used have been more user-friendly. The Lowrances were good but if you didn't really know how to tune it and read it well you weren't able to really get the most out of it. I know on one Garmin unit you could have it display targets as little fish symbols... I thought it was a PITA and useless since you couldn't tell what they were but it gives you an idea of how user-oriented they are.

I bought a Lowrance LCX15-MT back in 2000 for my Edgewater. Constant issues with it for 5 years until they replaced the display and I bought an Airmar transducer. Never agai will I buy a Lowrance product after that fiasco...

Lowrance used to be considered the "economy" brand. Now I think they have slipped below that rating.
