Loud Diesels

I have a Blackfin 32' Flybridge. I would like to quiet it down a bit. I have no mufflers at this point nor do I have any sound insulation on engine boxes.

In your experience which is going to give me more bang for the buck. Mufflers or insulating engine boxes. I will probably end up doing both before it's over. Question is which should I do first! Thanks.

I fish on a 30 blackwatch and it has insulated boxes and the desiels are very quiet... I am sure that insulating the boxes is more cost effictive...

Is the noise coming from exhaust or engine room?

The low throb of diesels is pretty non-directional. Hard to say. The sound more or less just permeates at this point. I'm inclined to think the boxes would be first priorty. On the other hand, no mufflers seems like a no-brainer.

when you go to insulate/soundproof, go for the gold, spend the extra money and locate some of the best soundproofing there is. the best i have found in the past was the kind i used to use to soundproof diesel genset boxes in the 3 million dollar Featherlite Luxury Coaches when i was on the service/design team. as picky as tony stewart is, if he is happy with the noise reduction it brought, then it must be the best. i tried 10 or so different types but the best i found was the kind that had a 1/16 layer of lead sandwiched in the middle and a silver foil wrapper on both sides.

Thanks for the info, gofshn. Everyone else too.

Okay. I'm convinced. Go with the boxes first. I've looked around the internet and there is a lot of different products out there. The one you mention sounds good. I really appreciate the fact that you did sounds tests yourself as well. Do you have a name by chance. Does anybody have any other specific products that they've had good luck with and would recommend? Thanks.

i cannot remember the name, but can find out in a day or so for you. i no longer work for Featherlite because i got tired of always traveling to nascar races all the time for technical support. let me know if you need the info.

here you go, this is the stuff i am referring to, massive attenuation when applied to genset/engine boxes and panels.

http://www.cyber-bridge-marine.com/l...dproofing.html

http://www.cyber-bridge-marine.com/e...generator.html

look at the attenuation levels and compare them as i cannot remember the exact one i used regularly.they will both work great, but one is rated for a higher temp, and higher db drop.
this company has about everything you could want. check around for it somewhere else at a cheaper rate though.

We had to insulate under the carpet of a 40 Cabo Express. C 12 Cats.
It worked well, its about 5/8 " thick. Cut down the noise.
If you need the product info send a PM.
