Loran Vs. GPS,
Back when all that I had was LORAN, I had no problem going back to a wreck or whatever. Now with the GPS system, when I put my TD's on a "known" wreck, I have a devil of a time finding, some still haven't been found again. With the old loran boxes, if we wanted to use Lon/Lat we had to "compensate" the unit.
Guess my question is with Loran as I understand it was nothing more than a reciever that measured the time a signal was detected from a transmitter (ie, TD's). Now my understanding is that there is a tri-.angulation via sattelite, then converted to TD's. I can see where the WAAS sytem would work once you RE-find the object you are looking for.
I am getting real close to just putting a LORAN unit back on the boat, is this a waste of time. I like to bottom fish, so getting back to the structure is important. By the way I have 2 GPS unit's on the boat now (Furuno and Lowrance), guess what there is about a 2.5microsecond difference between the 2.This just add's to my mis-trust in the new "better" system. Any help would be appreciated. Frank
To be more accurate when displaying TDs on your GPS, you have to adjust the offset. Without doing this your numbers will not be accurate, even with the offset it won't be perfect, but very close.

TunaTeaser1,
I'll have to check into the "offset" like you were talking about. I guess it's kinda the same thing I mentioned in the post but in reverse. If I set the offset on the GPS, will it effect the lat/lon position too? Lowrance told me that I could not adjust the unit, when I asked if the unit could be adjusted to match my Furuno unit. My GPS's and fish finder's are all stand alone, nothing is inter-phased. Can't figure out why 2 GPS unit sitting within feet of each other will have that much variance. Frank
Frank,
Yes in effect it would be the exact opposite of what you are talking about. However, it would only effect your loran and not your lat/lon settings if you chose to run that. Not all gps's are created equal and some won't allow you to change the offset on your loran. That's why I asked if you had a navnet unit because I know you can do it on that and most garmin units as well...not sure about lowrance. If you mess with your settings and happen to find a place where you can adjust the offset just let me know and I'll be happy to give you mine as per OI ( I believe you're hatris?) so they should be just about right. Hope that helps, something to try at least....maybe someone a little more educated in the area will chime in.

TunaTeaser,
Thank's for the reply and help. Gotta check into it for sure. I would think of the 2, that Furuno would have the offset capability. Thank's again, Frank
