I am repowering my 23 Mako with a steyr 250 horse inline 6.Before I sighn on the dotted line I wanted some opinions from other people who may have had experiance with this ehgine as it is not that common.I have heard very good things so far. my other choice was a 260 horse volvo penta inline 4.I have also looked at the cummins 4b250, but it is no longer available in the U. S.
I looked hard at them last year and though intrigued by many of the features I backed away because of servicability. We have a distributor in the pan handle a few hundred miles away and some potential dealers but very few actual parts on this side of the puddle... Yes the design makes them easy to work on but wiith no parts at fingertips length and no or few qualified mechanis around I backed off.
I already have problems along those lines with my peninsulars. I've got to the point that they are now Deep C's and not peninsulars after slowly creating my own mess out of their original mess. Peninsular is mbased in Michigan and couldn't even tell me what calibration to use on the standyne injection pumps they use to get the rated horse power.
I need engines that I can tell a qualified mechanic what it is , what the symptom is and he can fix it.
Of all the shopping I did the yanmar 240hp 4cyl best fits my boat. Loud and vibrative but what I have heard , reliable and very servicable with plenty of parts and people around who can help.
Volvo has turned to shit in my books. They run smooth, sound nice, and sip fuel. They talk a great game, but break one and they don't honor warranty or offer assistance worth a shit. They fought me on a motor I blew in the islands and left me stranded for eight weeks!
I just heard that the motor they replaced the blown one with that had 560 hours blew again just yesterday...
I have a customer who had them in his Blackfin and he loved them. I believe he is going to be a dealer for them now. He is located in the Richmond area.
