After some conversation on here about the Re -Con product I made some phone calls. This is from the "horse's" mouth so to speak. Let me say up front that I am a Cummins dealer, so I do have a dog in the fight. The marine re-con product is just what the name implie's. It is Reconditioned to "new" specs, not "rebuild" specs. Your re-con engine may have 70 to 80 percent of new parts in it to bring it to NEW spec's. That is why they can offer a 2 year warantee with the sale of the engines. The re-con plant has been in Mexico for 20 to 25 years. They have been building automotive re-con products there during the early years, about 10 years ago they started building the Marine re-con's because of the demand. Is there such thing as a "new Marine" B or C engine being built? Yes, But they can't be sold in the US because of emmision standards (which there are many, InterNational and US). The Re-con engines meet MARPOL standards, that is why they can be sold as they are. They are not TIER 2 compliant, which is why they can't be sold to NEW boats after 2000 in the USA.
I hope this offers some definition to the discussion. Also if there is a Cummins Dealer or a Cummins Rep out there that does not believe what is said is correct, well I'd be more than willing to hear where it's wrong, really. This is by no means an attemt to make this product sound better than any of the engine companies products (only you can be the judge of that). Frank
