Awesome pics. I have done some carpentry work in my time but nothing of this caliber. I have always been fascinated by the work that goes into these boats. Your boat looks like it's coming along nicely. Keep us updated on the progress.

    The Juniper Tree

One of the characteristic heathland shrubs of the chalk and limestone country is the Juniper - Juniperus communis. The shrub typically grows from 4 - 6 feet high with the trunk or stem often being contorted and twisted. The leaves take the form of needles of a deep green colour sometimes with a bluish-tinge, on account of which it is often known in folk tradition as the needle yew. The berries usually take two to three years to fully ripen, hence it is common to see both the bluish-black ripe berries alongside very green and under-ripe ones on the same bush.

    Frame and Keel

The keel and frames on this boat are also juniper. The laminated keel is formed with 3/4" x 5 1/4" pieces, all hand picked, close grain, fairly dense wood. No sap wood or knots. The bottom frames are 2" x 4" laminated with (4) 3/4" and(2) 1/2" pieces. Side frames are 2" X 3", laminated with (4) 3/4" pieces. All wood is glued together with a structural epoxy. The bottom frames have an average weight of 1.7 lbs./ linear foot.

That is some beautiful workmanship! I Noticed the tight grain and didnt think there was that much good cedar around any more? big marlin will come close just to see the workmanship.

    Ah Juniper

Ah Juniper, aka Atlantic White Cedar.

The Bite Me is built out of her, and only weighs 26,000 pounds, full of fuel, water, full freezer and all the tackle on board. Needless to say, she shoves easy.

My former mate Eric Holmes, who now runs the Boss Lady www.bossladysportfishing.com named his daughter Sophie Juniper. How cool is that?

Nothin like the smell of freshly planed Juniper.

Lookin good on the build there bud, Sweepin shear, old school I dig it.
