    Question Johnson 175 Info

With a heavy heart I sold the Tuna Taxi the other day, and have begun the search for her replacement. Since it will likely take a while to find the right boat, I'm buying a mid-20's center console in the interim to keep me fishing the bay so I don't jones out and buy something too fast.

I'm eye-balling one with twin 175 HP Johnsons, 2004 models. 2-stroke carbed engines.

Does anyone have experience with these engiens and can give me info (good or bad), and fuel consumption info at say 3000rpm, 4000rpm & max would be great if you have it.

Any/all info is welcome, however please refrain from the 2-stroke/4-stroke and EFI/carb debates.

    Thanks in advance.

figure fuel consumption on a 2 stroke carb'd outboard like this...again,this is the formula for carb'd engines...

10 % of the total hp...example...you got a pair of 175's,right ? total of 350hp,10% is 35,right ?? 35 gph is approx what these engines will burn at full throttle, figure half of that at cruise, around 4,000rpm...so,figure around 17-18gph total...alot of this depends on how the boat is propped...you need to have the boat propped correctly...you wanna run it fully loaded, full fuel, enclosure down, people and duplicate weight, take it out and pin the throttles, see what the max rpm is,you want the engines turning that top rpm number,if it doesn't turn that number,it's not right and it's costing you fuel money...when you hear people state "these engines are thirsty, and they really suck fuel",their boat is overwheeled, that's the reason they're burning so much fuel...

those engines,'04's,carb'd...these guys will run forever, very basic engines, basic ignition system and basic fuel system-simple is good...treat these guys to good oil-bombardier xd30 is fine, decarb these once a season, spring is best, before you put the boat back into service, and run them...water pumps every few seasons,do the thermostats at the same time, and you're set...

Thanks Jimmy, I appreciate the info. It's been a while since I've had an outboard boat and have not kept up with which make/model/year were good/bad. Sounds like these will work if they run good now.

v6 175 loopers are great motors. Check the compression on the cylinders before purchase.
