    Thanks again.

Our local Borders book store has it in stock for 19.95. I'm going to pick it up today ad start reading. As for now I'll raise the idol up a bit. After it comes up to temp and starts to search, it stalls. Dead cold, it starts right up and idols at 1400-1500 Rpms. As it starts coming down, the searching starts and gets worse until it stalls. I can slowly adjust the idol as it warms up to keep if from stalling and try to get it as low as possible.

I'll be able to read my book on rebuilding the carb as I wait for the ordered parts to come in.

    Any Quick Tips?

    Thanks,
    John

John there are some "relatively" inexpensive throttle body bolt on fuel injection systems out there you may want to look into. Im not suggesting them over carbs per sey but it is another option. I have a friend who made the switch and he loves it plus he said he gets better fuel economy. Idumped my rochester due to some issues I didnt feel like screwing with and ran a holley 600 on my 5.7 350 with the electric choke there was some re-enginnering involved but it worked very well.

    Hi John,

Sorry I didn't get to this sooner, but I was out most of the day working on my boat.

By now you should have read enough of the book to be a Rochester expert, so my quick tip is to follow the book. Good luck.

I have often thought about TB set up. I think for now I will attempt
this rebuild. Avenger, I must say that the book did not put my mind
at ease. It's still scary! I'll wait for the parts to come in and give it a try.

It looks worse than it is. Just find yourself a nice clean work area where you'll be able to work undisturbed and lay everything out. Old baking pans (muffin pans are the best) or paper plates are good for holding things that might roll around.

Also, in my experience, unless you know for sure that something is not adjusted correctly don't fool with it. If you do need to make adjustments, make sure you record where it was set originally i.e. number of turns.

I have faith in you, and remember; God hates a coward.

I may have found the problem. I located a cracked vacuum diaphragm housing. This is supposed to crack the choke blade at start up so it won't flood or bog at idol. The outer housing was cracked. Now the only problem is locating one. I have done the research and can't locate one as of yet. The rod has to be the same length and the restrictor has to be the same. either .10/.15/.20 are the only two requirements that I have read. Any idea where I can locate one and how much?

I found one at a local speed shop for 11.45 I was surprised they had 30 year old carb parts. It's located in their warehouse and will be in tomorrow and I will pick it up on the way home from work.

If anyone needs the part number for future reference it is....
    CPA38.

Thanks and I'll let you know how I made out with it shortly,
    John

After reading the Rochester carb book, I learned It was probably a choke problem and started looking at the choke pull off. I found it cracked and ordered a replacement. It's installed but I haven't tested it yet.

    I HAVE A BIGGER PROBLEM !!!!

When trailering my boat last time out, The rear axle, driver side bearing, burned and smoked. I pulled it off when I got in in the driveway and it's done. I scored the rear axle and the whole thing needs to be replaced. I knew the trailer wasn't in good shape but wanted to wait till spring to use some tax money to upgrade and get a nice used roller trailer for $1500 or less. Well just how things work out is I'm now faced with doing somthing sooner then later and don't have the money to upgrade the trailer. I'm looking into a few options as of now. My best case scenario is I found a 24ft Sea Ray on a trailer with a bad motor. The owner just wants it out of his driveway for FREE !!! I'm waiting to hear back on this deal.

I'll test it tomorrow and run the motor on land to see if it's better. There is one more piece to this equation. I started having fuel delivery problems at anything above half throttle. It started all of a sudden on the way back in. To me it seems like it was starving for fuel. If I pushed it above half throttle, it would start to choke and stall. If I dropped the rpm's, it would catch and run fine. Possibly a clogged fuel vent, time to change out the water/fuel separator, fuel pump going bad or junk in the tank. I pulled the in line fuel filter and it was really clean.

I'll give you a run down tomorrow about the deal / the choke pull off and the fuel delivery after I run it on land after work.
