Let's give this a try. Building a boat is 80% sanding and grinding. So if you reduce the sanding you reduce the cost. The end product finish will not be the same, but the structure should be.
When I built my first boat it was for myself, to be my forever boat. The one concern I had was that I didn't want my boat to look like a homemade boat. It had to look like a pro built it.
That meant I had to do a lot of sanding.
She was a 37ft express boat. It took about 2 years, working nights and weekends to build. I had one buddy helping me. The materials including basic electronics, rebuilt cat diesels and a recycled tower came to $150,000. That was 12years ago. The prices of materials have increased by about 30%.
