I/O vs. Jackshaft
I am looking at the Carolina Classic boats (used) and I have found a couple contenders.....question is...1 has "Jackshaft" and the other is listed as "I/O". What are the differences in these 2 and a few pro/cons of 1 vs. the other.

On that boat it's the same the engine is located midship and a shaft runs to the transom and engages the outdrive. It keeps your transom clear and puts the center of gravity lower and more in the center of the hull.

And a lower center of gravity is a good thing.

Your transom isn't totally clear, you still have an out drive hanging back there but it sure beats a big old outboard.
Which power plant/outdrive combo are you looking at? I have a Yanmar 315 with a Mercruiser Bravo IIIX outdrive. Let me know if I can be of any help.

Sea J,
both of those are I/O. the jackshaft is connecting the outdrives to the power. You can also check out www.carolinaclassicboatowners.com. There are alot of experienced classic owners on there that can answer most any question you have about them. |

I had a Carolina Classic with the jackshaft and as mentioned before the weight of the engine being forward improved the ride in rough seas and frees up the inside fishing area. The down faals include increased vibration (if the shaft is not tuned) and the driveshaft itself is a very dangerous area if left exposed while running. The CC25 is a tank of a boat and made for off shore, but rolls terrible in the short choppy stuff.
