I need info on volvotamd 63s?

I am thinking about buying a 31 blackfin with twin volvo tamd 63s and i know nothing about them. I was hoping that someone can give me some info on how they are. Do they have any issues? Any info would be great thanks.

I don't know much about that particular engine, but you can find more info on it than you can use at www.boatdiesel.com. Well worth the $25-ish it costs to join.

Last fall I was asking the same question on a couple of other websites.

I was looking at a Pursuit with the same motors.

The general opinion was to stay away. Now I don't know what year your looking at, but I was looking at a 2000 model year.

Seems like parts are quite expensive and are hard to get.

I talked to a couple of mechanics and they told me to stay away as well. One was a marine mechanic and the other guy, who is a good friend of mine, works on diesel trucks, but someone he knows has the TMAD 63's and has had so much trouble with them that he was in the process of a re-power.

That being said, there were some guys that had nothing but good to say about them. (can't decisions be easy for once) One lobster guy from up north told me he had over 30000 hours on one and never had any major problems.

I ended up staying away from the volvos and went with the Cummins.

Only time will tell.

Good luck

Like Giantfan stated, you're going to get mixed reactions on this one. When I had Volvo's one ran great and the other one was just a pain, after 4 years of this I threw in the towel and repowered with Yanmars. If I were to make an opinion on the Volvos, based on my port engine I would say they were great but if I used my starboard as an example I would say RUN.The parts prices are extremely high and around my area not readily available, let alone finding a mechanic that would work on them. When I had to have major service work done,it took me a couple weeks to get a shop out of state in De to come to Md.The engines tend to smoke at start up and idle and is considered normal. The one good thing I can say about them is they are very fuel efficient.
