    Hull displacement!

I have a serious question for the professional boat builders. If you take a boat like the Leprechaun and add a 1/4" all the way around the hull sides and transom, does it do anything measurable to the displacement or does the additional width & length basically cancel out the added weight?

    Fritz,

I'm not a builder but have been around a "few" boats. I suppose your talking about adding glass to her? I would think that if your adding 1/4 of glass to the hull (that would make 1/2 total for both sides). If you held to the same angles that are already "proven" you would not notice any detrimental performance.
My last commercial boat was a lobster hull built in Biddiford Maine. She was a double planked, everdure, mahogany hull, with oak framing. I hauled the boat and let her dry out for about 3 months. Sandblasted the hull, hand troweled 5200 out of 5 gallon buckets, put a layer of 36oz multi-directional stitch mat, the used vinylester resin. After that I used another layer of the same glass, but in the opposite direction, again vinylester resin. Put a third layer on the keel, use a 1oz finishing mat, then 2 coats of gelcoat. That added quite abit to the dimentions of the hull I guess. But with the lack of water soaked wood, (giving me overall less wieght), I would say it was well worth the effort. That boat was absolutely awesome! I ended up cutting out her frames and laminated new frames that conformed to the hull. She not only did not leak, but was nearly bullet proof. It was a very sad day when I sold that boat, something I regret to this day.Frank

i'm not a pro(shocking huh?)...but if you think about it, anything you add that is heavier than water to the outside of the original hull will make it sit lower in the water.plus the glass added above the waterline figures in..

no doubt the original hull is lighter now that it is dry, so maybe that cancels out the added glass weight.. i really doubt you'll see much difference in the water line.

ps...i thought you had a marine architect and a master builder at your disposal?...they can't answer this simple question for you?...maybe they are tired of your crap too....?
