HPDI with Navman fuel flow meter?

Hello all - Great site. I will get up to speed with an intro in another forum, but for this one.......

Does anyone have an HPDI motor with a Navman fuel flow meter? Any problems? I placed a call to Yamaha customer service to get thier .02, they said that as long as the flow transducer does not create a restriction there will be no problem. I was looking for guys who may be running HPDI's with fuel flow meters attached who have actually put hours on and what their experience has been.

    Thanks for any replies

Why not just use the Yamaha Fuel Management system? They work very well.

Already own the Navman from my pre-repower engine. If I cant get a warm fuzzay about the Navman I will fork out the $ for the Yami version. No sense in nuking a new motor due to something I could have avoided.

fishinfool, you will have no problem at all with that system. as a matter of fact it is very similar to the yami system itself, ir paddle wheel meter. good luck with your new repower.

    Matey,

Thanks for the reply. Are you running one or the other on your rig? Knowing that the injected motors have the computer "tattle tale" my reservation is not only nuking the motor but voiding the warranty while I am at it. I wonder what the ruling would be if the Yami fuel transducer caused a high vac condition and burned up the motor? Is anyone on the board a dealer or Yami tech?

fishfool, i have a mercury motor with the navman fuel meter. itis a 250 EFI. i put it on when the boat was new in '01. i have had noproblems with anything from it at all. like i said the flo scan brand and navman brand are basically the same deal, a IR sensor with a paddle wheel it counts the pulses of the wheel to make the calculationon the used fuel. i cannot see how it will void your warranty but i am not a yami dealer.

I installed a 3100 model on my little 150 Yammie. The transducer installs in the fuel line, no where near the motor. The instructions that came with it said basically (as I recall) that it was essentially non-restrictive to the flow up to 350 HP. Its basically just a little spinning turbine in the fuel line. It could even be at the tank end if you put a filter in front of it. Thats to protect the sensor, not the motor. I can't see any conceivable way it could harm an engine.

    better flow

Well, I just found this thread from a year ago, and my situation has changed. Now I am the one looking to add a fuel flow measurement system to a 300 HPDI. I will not use another Navman 3100, I don't think.

While I didn't bother to complain about it here, the Navman was giving me problems less than a year after I installed it. I was going nuts thinking the Yammi 150 was leaking fuel or something. My mileage, as calculated by the Navman 3100, was getting worse and worse. I could not find any problem with the outboard. It was a real headscratcher, until I filled the tank one time and it took 12 gallons less than I figured it would hold. 12 gallons is significant in a 38 gallon tank, almost a 32 % error. And since it thought I had used 32% more fuel to go the same distance (measured by the GPS interfaced to the Navman) of course it told me my mileage was going to hell. But it was wrong.

And thinking it over, I don't think it was the little fuel-line sensor. All that could do in fail mode would be to either slow down, or get clogged and stop. But in either of those cases, it would tell me I was using less fuel and my mileage numbers would look fantastic. And I would need MORE gas to fill up the tank than figured, not less.

So, by deduction, the problem was in the Navman computer itself.

And now I am the proud new owner of a 300 HPDI, a legendarily thirsty animal. And at over $5 a gallon for fuel, fine tuning the RPM, tilt, and tabs to maximize MPG is important to me.

Can any one of you guys recommend what would be the BEST fuel flow system to install this time around? I would only consider another Navman if they had a Mark II version or similar with some improvements I believed in.

    the straight out truth...

those navman units, the lowrance fuel units, both are junk-terrible...i've seen nothing but problems with these units...i realize you have the navman unit, not the lowrance, but i've experienced problems with both of these...
you want either the yamaha fuel management,or the flo scan unit-absolutley nothing else...these are the best...

    yamaha - yamaha - yamaha!!!!

my grandpa used to tell us kids... "back in the old days when a mule would not listen to a command given they would knock it upside the head and get it's attention.." so don't make us come hurt ya... (<~~ I am just being funny here )... but Yamaha or flo-scan is your simple options don't make things harder or use old stuff...
