How well does awlgrip ( sterling, perfection) adhere to Formica ??
I read somewhere that with sanding, 545 primer, scuffed up primer and paint ( at that an Interlux single-part urethane) gave good results.
Anyone tried something like this ??

FORMICA
FINE - IF YOU SCUFF THE FORMICA RIGHT IT WILL PAINT WELL. AWLGRIP WILL BE THE BEST CHOICE. A LATEX PAINT WILL NOT WORK. WHAT IS THE APPLICATION ? IF IT IS NEW CONSTRUCTION AND YOU JUST WANT A GOOD PAINTABLE SURFACE USE MDO (MEDIUM DENSITY OVERLAY) IT IS A MARINE GRADE DOUG FIR PLYWOOD WITH A PAPER OVERLAY. IT IS A.K.A. SIGNBOARD. I WAS MAKING DOCK BOXES AND SPRAYING WITH IMRON TO MATCH MY HULL COLOR THEN TRIMMIN OUT WITH TEAK, A ND THE BOX HAS BEEN ON MY DOCK FOR 10 + YEARS AND IT STILL LOOKS GOOD. PAINTS LIKE GLASS.
IS THIS INTERIOR OR EXTERIOR APPLICATION ? IF EXTERIOR CHECK WHAT TYPE OF GLUE THE FORMICA WAS ADHERED WITH.

Thanks Driftwood
This is for a small bulkhead under the console and an anchor locker door. Just to clean them up.

If Ignorance is bliss, Why aren't more people happy?
If you want to remove the formica altogether, you can use a heat gun. Heat a small area and get a metal scraper under the corner. Work your way around.
You can then either recover with formica or use another overlay...
