I got it to act up on land at 2800-3000 RPM's . It started getting worse not just at high end anymore. It also completely shut of for a split sec. several times in a row at different speeds. From what I read the slator controls all voltage. When it starts to go bad it could malfunction in many different ways. Sputtering stalling misfiring ect. Well that is my .02 cents worth Ha ! HA !

jaws you are world class dude. I have a little story for you all. johnebquick was filling his gas tank at the wawa on 40 here in DE and I was buying my favorite coffee one night. We started talking about his starcraft and he was concerned about the e10 mix we have at the pumps up here. I gave johnebquick two SFC stickers and said there is a post on the website concerning this, and to check it out. Well he signed up asked a few questions and Jaws was there to help as all were at SFC. Jaws walked johnebquick through some tests and 13 days later or so this boat is ready to fish again and johnebquick will have his son on the water this summer for some fish. Now if that ain't the cats meow I don't know what is.....This place is world friggin class I tell ya.....ROCK ON SFC MEMBERS !!!!

Before you start throwing money out the door hook up a timming light. When the engine is breaking up go from cyliner to cylinder. The one the light stops working on is the cylinder that is loosing spark. I did not see the year listed of your outboard but by the picture its a looper. Some of these engines have a shift switch installed on them. This switch will kill the spark to the stbd. bank. If you have a spark issue on cylinders 1 & 4 unhook the switch and see what happens. You should not run a outboard over 1,000 while on a hose unless its hooked up to a dyno. You should be in the water in gear.

Thanks/B-Bill

Thanks again for all the tips and info. I have already dropped the boat off Wed night at Demarco's Proformance Marine in Newark De. He's located in Industral business Park off of Newark-Elkton Rd. Anyone have any feedback on Victor from Demarco's? He sounded like a trustworthy guy. I am many things and I pride myself in many different fields, but marine machanic I'm not
I will find out happened on mon and keep everyone informed. By the way it is a 1985 Evinrude 120 (E120TLCO)
(E)--------Evinrude
(120)------HP
(T)--------Elect Trim/Start/Tilt
(L)--------Model Length 20in Transom
(CO)------Year 1985
The motor is a 1985 and the hull # on the starcraft identifies the boat as a 1987 Starcraft (STRV66440787)
(STR)-----Manufacturer Ident. Code
(STR)=Starcraft
(V6644)---Series #
(C)-------Month of Manufacture Date
(C)=March
(7)-------Year of Manufacture Date
(7)=1987
(87)------Model Year 1987

Fuel fill was disconected and vent hose was left and a 18 gal poly tank was installed. I have a fuel gauge, but being it is not the original tank it can not be hooked up to the poly tank. Also the trim sending unit is bad. Are these expensive to replace or is it not worth the money on such an old boat?
Some list at as a looper and some start with 1986 as the first year as a looper. Not sure which it is.

I would not worry about the time sender. YOu do not need a trim gauge. You can feel when its trimed out right. This sender can be a problem some times to remove. The looper did start to show up in the 1985 lineup. I do not believe the early model had the shift switch. I would have to look that up. As for is the boat worth it. If you like the boat then you fix it. If the boat does not offer you want then put that money towards something that does.

Found the problem

The problem was not one but two bad coils and an intermitten problem with the switchbox. The two coils had arc marks accross the top of each coil from grounding on the block. And one bad plug wire. At this point I will replace all 4 coils at (19.98 EA) and the switchbox at (126.00). Also the new glass fuel filter was restricting my flow. Threw it away. Vic said the water/fuel filter that I installed was 10 microns or better and its all I needed. Yahhhh ! I hope this gets me on the water this weekend ! See ya out there Flatbottom !

This Weekend

I get her back on Wed night. I'll sea trial her on Wed or Thur night. If all goes well I'm Game for either chesp. or Del Bay. I haven't been to either one. Wife and kids want to play, not fish so I might have to play first. I'll let you know. Where are you headed? Also any fish in thoes retention ponds next to your house? HA ! H A !

P.S. I'll probally run out of Augustine Beach on the Del River Wed or Thur. It's close and easy!

JBQ the kids in the neighborhood catch the fish and take them to their pond. Then other kids catch them and bring them back. I see ! pound bass and small bluegill, a few painted turtles that lay eggs in the yard, cray fish the size of your hand(those buggers are mean) minnows I place there after fishing fluke, some black snakes, blue heron, white heron, and thanksgiving dinner(Goose)...LOL....lots of them. The wife had 75 one day eating cracked corn...LOL....three fox, and a partridge in a pear tree. !! LOLOL

Saturday I have a pig roast to attend on the elk river, turkey point area. Sunday if the waves are nice I will be jigging blue fin on the wellcraft. Bad wind scenario and I will be inshore or drifting the route 50 bridge in O.C for fluke if the tides work for me.

glad you are getting to the water this week. Let us know how you did !! on the sea trial....
