I try not to very hard. A lot of times I screw up and under estimate$?$?$?

Jim you have a reputation to uphold! Quality work for a quality price? You are the bench mark for most of us. We had a boat in the yard and joe asked me to give a price during the summer for new fuel tanks and repair the deck on a 25 pursuit. You did some work on the yam OBs I believe? A couple days ago I had to let the owner and the new owner from minnesota take the boat out of the yard. while talking to the owner and him complaining that 6,000 for new tanks and deck repairs was so high he had to sell it instead? Then I asked if he got a price from you and he said 7. Even though we didnt get the job either I was elated I didnt under estimate too bad. Heres the best? The guy from minnesota claims he can do it him self for 3?? So have at it. Jim With business expenses and labor expenses It aint easy? Just keep plugging? As bad as the repair business is? Its better then new boat construction. Infact The boat companies are trying to do repair work just to keep employees and the doors open? So theres even more competition?

Sounds like you're getting a lot of what I get... Funny how perceive value or worth. I've found that if you discount a little they want a lot or it for free... Alos have found that if I go Deep on a discount I get bit on the ass...
    Pisses me off...

My charter prices have been the same for 5 years. People call me up and are in shock how much it is to fish. what kills me even more is that there are guys in my area that are doing a full day for less than I charge for a half. After a year they are complaining about being broke and a bunch are trust fund kids.
    MirrOlure when big fish count!

yes, sometimes more than i like, but sometimes i do it voluntarily if it just means a small amount of time for a good customer. most people i talk to in business say you cant get 100% billable hours if working by the hour in a shop.

    here's a statistic...
    the automobile industry-repair service,on the average,they "bill" 150% of their time,meaning,for a 40hr week,they bill for 60hrs...

average marine repair,40% of their time is billed...

    why i started this:

i checked out a boat for a guy.his boat was damaged when it struck an object, the boat was uninsured.i gave an estimate of damage, complete with pictures.i spent over 3hrs checking things out and typing things out...
apparently, the owner isn't very happy he got billed for a lousy $200 for my time...

They will pay the average surveyor to tell them?? While most have no real experience?

Very few surveyors have ever taken a grinder, saw zaw, or gallons of resin and acetone into a 30 year old bilge? Yet they pay them to be told what we KNOW and EXPERIENCE evry day.

Jimmy, this can be a double edge sword, but some business got
a FREE estimates policy some not, maybe as an idea you should tell the costumer b4, that good estimates are real time consuming job,and cost you money/time, but if he give you the job then maybe you can do something about it.
Yes when it come to business time is money.
