Help me choose a Marlin fighting chair

I am in the six month wait on my new boat and am in the process of choosing equipment. I had a Pomponette chair on my last boat. It had a serious rust problem esp. on the deck ring and pipe stand. Pomponette would not deal with the problem even though I bought it from their shop in Lauderdale. The boat before the Cabo, a Blackfin, had a Release Marine chair, also bought new. This chair had a mixture of alum. and stainless parts and electrolysis was a constant issue. I am looking at Murry Brothers, which is a very good line. I saw an ad for a company called, Nautical Design. Their website show some really nice stuff. Anyone Know of this company.
    Thanks
    Capt. Larry

Tough to beat Murray Products. GOOD PEOPLE building attractive, proven, but somewhat pricey products.

Hey what kind of boat did you buy? Please tell me you bought the Viking. I don't know too much about chairs, I always thought the release marine were on of the best. I heard that murry Bros. were recently bought out by egg harbor, but I don't think that means much. Good luck!

We have had zero problems since we started using it in 2003.

I've got a Release Marine chair and I am very pleased. Beautiful teak and no electrolysis. Chair gets compliments from everyone on the boat. I am familiar with Nautical Design. I have never used their chairs but I saw one at a show...very nice. I did buy a helm station piece for my old boat that I was very impressed with. Good luck!

Yes I placed an order for the 45C Viking. I Expect to see the boat in January. I am having a full tower installed and that is all I know for certain at this point. Electronics have advanced so much since I bought my Cabo 5 years ago, it will take months to learn and decide. I do lean towards Raymarine though, but I am looking at everything.

sweet man, awesome boat. A 45 or 48 viking is my dream boat. always has been, always will be. The only one I have ever been out on was an older 53, and I was impressed at how solid it was. After 16 years of fishing, the boat does not rattle or shake. Amazing. As for electronics, I really like the raymarine e-series. Very easy to use and can accept weather input as well as video. I hear the new northstar touch screen unit is pretty nice also.

    Capt Larry-

Congrats on the new Viking. I purchased a Murray Brothers late 1970's large tuna chair and reworked the entire chair including chrome and teak. That vintage chair is chrome over brass and is VERY heavy duty. I LOVE mine! Attached are some pics of the final product for you.

Their chairs are top notch but you will pay the price for them. A new one at around $10K was not in the budget for me. If it's within your budget, I would get a Murray Brothers hands down. FYI, the new chairs are stainless steel and are somewhat lighter than the older chairs and do stand up to pitting VERY well.

I talked with Nautical Design guys at the NY boat show this year. They have GREAT looking products and will customize anhthing for you. I do not have any direct dealings with them, but I would seriously consider them. Note, the best time to get the best price from Nautical Design is in the late fall/early winter since they are slow that time of year. Looks like that just ight fit your schedule.

    Good luck!

    JD5652,

Thanks for the pictures. That is a good looking chair. The Viking will have Murry Brother helm seats, so the Murry fighting chair is the natural choice. Good tip on a Fall or winter purchase! I plan on spending 5 days at the Fort Lauderdale boat show being a general pain in the ass to equipment venders

If you want the best chair money can buy the murray chair is by far the best. Varnished or laquered they are without question the best. I have pompanette in fact its 1991 circa and no rust issue at all but thats an economy version with mostly aluminum components...

That being said... If you want a Murray let me know. I worked for Ed Murray in the tackle end for years. Frank and Vinny the chair end became like family. I'm sure I could help you out...
