Hatteras 65

Might go for a Hatteras 65 from late 80's. Anyone know what to look for? Any weaknesses? Places for rot? Places of bad wiring? Hoses? Tubing? Cracks?

Always thought those ships where the sh!ts, but never worked on one or fished from one so all help is highly appreciated.

Our first 65 ft Hatteras was a 1988 with 12cyl MTU's ! I Love that boat we keep it for 5years and fished it Hard , spend 8 months in the Bahamas ! 22 to 24 Knot boat & a full keel needed 5 ft ! It is a TANK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No Problems with Quailty Control with Hatteras !!!!!!!!!!

Those older one's were tanks....but you may need a tanker to keep it fueled up.

I don't know what your CC burns but I would GUESS that 65 Hat with 12 cyl Detroits will burn 80-90 gal per hour at cruise.

Imagine the three two strokes, 4.0 litres, V8's from the 80's on the picture to your left... 80-90 GPH will be a nice change..

Don't take it the wrong way though, driving my three outboard Scarab is a blast, and for trolling I just shut off the outer engines and can troll all day long with a better GPH than the generator on a Hatt 65....

However, I am just looking for some weak spots to look for while doing the survey and any and all help is appreciated.

Wow, I would have thought maybe 45 per hour in the CC...glad I don't have one of those rigs!! I have a 1977 42' Hatteras that was completely refit in 1999-2000....awesome sea boat and a tank. Luckily, with twin 450 Cummins I burn about 32 gal or so per hour.

Thumbs up

About 6 months ago a mid 80's 65 Hattie sold no reserve on ebay for about $225K. It had a hard enclosed, air conditioned bridge and looked awesome from the pictures, reasonably well maintained by someone obviously getting out of boating. I gave it a lot of thought, but I'm too close to getting out of big boating, too.
It would make a heluva waterfront cottage on the gulf, though and slow cruises out of the marina couldn't consume too much fuel.

I'm very new here but have an old Hatt 58YF - try this forum, you'll get all the answers (and then some) you could ever want.
