Has anyone Rhino lined their boats?

I am in the process of rebuilding a 17' Hewes flats boat. Still a long way off from the finished product but I am thinking about ideas now. Instead of taking the time to fair the entire inside of the skiff I want to Rhino Line it.

Has anyone had it done to their boats or been on a boat that has it? Im just curious as to what it is like to fish on it all day. For example is it slippery, how well does it clean, cost??

    Any input would be appreciated.

I had the deck of my lobster boat Rhino-lined when it was new (10 years ago).

There are a number of non-skid additives that can be added to the Rhino product to make it less slippery. I don't have an issue with it being too slippery.

After ten years of abuse, the Rhino is beginning to peel in some areas. Problem being, it's difficult to repair Rhino. Sometime in the future I will be stripping the Rhino in favor of two-part polyurethane. Not looking forward to the project of stripping it off. My arms are already sore thinking about it. I can't apply gelcoat as the deck is epoxy coated. I would much rather grind and add additional epoxy and paint as needed rather than deal with chipped and peeled Rhino.

The other issue with Rhino is that it tends to fade or discolor. Whatever color you opt to spray with probably won't be the same after six months in the sun.

Not sure what the cost is these days. Quite sure I paid about $2300 to have the deck sprayed. Deck on my boat is 15' x 23' or 345 sq ft.

Rhino may be more practical for a recreational boat - from a wear and tear standpoint. You will still have the discoloration issue to contend with. Rhino also sells a UV protectant.

Duraliner might prove to be a better product.

I used durabak on my lobster boat deck. They make a uv protected product that can be rolled on. It costs around $120 per gallon. I actually used their smooth product on the insides of the gunwales and their textured on the deck. It was a good product to work with and comes in a bunch of colors. It is still pretty new so I can not comment on fading but it is supposed to be uv protected.

    Good to hear

Storm- Thanks for the reply. I think If you can get away with it for 10 years on a Lobster boat dragging pots and the abuse, It should be okay on a skiff that has sperry deck shoes and xtra-tuff boots for 300 hours a year at best. But, Its good to hear a workings mans perspective on the non-skid ability.

Block and Tackle, Quest, Thanks I'll look into those brands

Im leaning towards a light gray flat color to cut down on glare and I think that would be an easy color to keep clean, so fading should not be to much of an issue.

Just did the cockpit on a 44 Henriques last weekend with Kiwi Grip. Prep was reasonable....Went on like a dream and the final result came out very well. I don't have first hand long term experience on the durability, but my research showed most people very happy with it 2-3 seasons after application.

you get 4 years out of it JD..

sand some ad roll ( gloop roller ) out more...

I always thought about the rino linner though but you have to use wire line tape with it and the heat it makes going down seems to pull up some fairing and fillers along with having a piece not stick.. done right it IS a "rino liner" though.

..others have done well! ..lobster use is about as good as a testement as I have heard..

the cost is way up there in our area though also and 'who' stands behind it, or 'do it' here is another factor for me. just in our area. good luck and no slipping!

PS: I wish I had all the money that 'I' or anyone else who had me paint awlgrip non skid for them in front of me.. that song "If I had a million dollars".. comes to mind..

X2 for Kiwigrip. Did the prep myself and all the application. It was everything they advertised and more. After one season, it has been great and very durable. Five Stars *****
