Guide coat?

Could some one please tell me if you can make a guide coat solution out of water and food coloring? I am getting ready to start fairing a boat and was curious if this would work?

We use black spray paint and just make a light overspray coat. Then wetsand it until it was all faired away!

Denatured alcohol and red food coloring really works well.

As Tarbaby said, denatured alcohol and food coloring works best for us. It not only cleans the surface but the liquid wiped over it goes into pinholes much better than a spackle coat of spray paint and doesn't miss a trick! If you'r using it over a shiny paint, you may want to scuff off the waxy surface so it will show better.

beats the heck outta the spray smell and over spray also.. sanding sucks...!
