    Unhappy gps and dsc radio issues

    Anyone have any experience with interfacing radio's with a GPS
    I bought a Uniden UM525and am trying to make it work with a Garmin 188 plotter/sounder and I am having difficulty as the wires on both do not match up in color or description.
    Here is what the GPS has for NMEA 0183
    Blue=NMEA out com 1 tx
    brown=NMEA in com 1 rx
    green=com2 rx
    white=com 2 tx

    Now here is where it gets interesting. On the radio I have these...
    orange=nmea0183 out -
    yellow=nmea0183 in -
    green=nmea0183 out+
    white=nmea0183 in+

    I thought I had enough foresight to ask if this radio would work with this GPS...and I think jim said it was...but now I am stumped!
    Help

    I did mine over the summer and the way I understand it, this should do it for you:

    GPS blue to radio yellow
    GPS brown to radio orange

    Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong

    Good luck

    Thumbs up

    I did not know you were on this site!
    Thanx again Jim and glad to see you here!
    I clicked out of the other place so I will ask again here. Is there any other setup to do? It does not look like it according to either of the manuals!

    Jim aced the wiring. The thing that gets most people is that Garmin using the ground power wire for the NMEA (-) in and out also.

    You may have to go in and turn on your NMEA ouput on the Garmin and set the language and Baude rate. The manual for my VHF did not specify either so I had to keep cycling through the settings until I hit on the right combination and the VHF recognized it. There is usually a light or a set of letters on the VHF display to let you know it is receiving a good signal from your GPs. you'll also need to go to http://www.seatow.com/boating_safety/mmsi.asp or a similar site and register for an MMSI number. Once you get that, you'll need to program itinto your VHF.

    I would hope he got it right, I bought it from him because I have been watching him answer questions like that for quite awhile.
    I remember something about Garmin having language issues, and in reading through my manual my gps is set for Garmin Data Transfer and I think I need to change that to NMEA in/NMEA out (I think) as far as the baud setting a new radio should be able to talk as fast as my old garmin, right? although if it is just baud rate I can sift through that pretty quickly

    The Garmin Data Transfer is for sending and receiving to other Garmin units or a laptop with their Blue Chart or Map Source Program. You will need to set which ever port you wired into ( the instructions were for Com Port 1) to NMEA In/NMEA Out. I didn't see anything your manual for Language or speed so maybe that's automatic now I haven;t set one up since the 128's weree the new kids on the block.

    I did a little reading on your VHF. It will give you a GPS OK text message on the screen once you have them hooked together and communicating properly. Once you program your MMSI number in it will give you that number and a tone when you initially power up your VHF. Looks like a nice unit.

    Yes, same as the VHF. Do you have the NMEA out on the radio turned on and the NMEA in on the GPS turned on and hooked up?

    Graceland...Thats excactly what it did, and I did not have to mess with the baud rate, it is still at 4800.
    Now the question is if I get a distress signal or want to see my buddy on my gps will it work?
    I have some more reading to do before I get that far, but I have to get my fuel flow in first!
