There's a function in there to generate a signal so you can check it. But being a wrench turning mechanic, I wouldn't trust it until one of my buddies called me and it came up on my plotter.

I had a time with my Garmin and finally had to call Garmin and Icom tech assist to get mine hooked up. After the install I still had to go in and change the sentencing on my plotter.

To get your buddys numbers to come across your plotter, you have to have there numbers program into your VHF.It will not just show up unless they hit the distress button. Please correct me if I am wrong.

No. All they need is your MMSI and they can inquire your position or send you their position. You can set yours up a number of different ways. You can automatically accept all calls, accept only calls from MMSI numbers you have programed in, or set it to prompt you to accept or decline all MMSI calls. If someone hits the distress key, their position should show on your plotter, and some radios will show the lat/lon on their display, and your radio should automatically switch over to channel 79.
