The guys hit the ground running again this morning and covered her in awl quick fairing compound. This is a high build material to cover the weave in the cloth.
It looks like it just went from gray to brown but the build up is the real difference. It will sit over the weekend and they will block sand it on monday morning. The next step will be to fair the low spots with compound and resand those areas and shoot her with some high build primer.
I went over to the shop yesterday afternoon and Greg had finished the bait and drink box he custom built so we did the finish fit and glued it in place. Both of the boxes are made from 2 inch laminated foam and will hold ice really well. She is coming along really well.
I'll post more as the progress continues, it's going to be a short week with the holiday coming up. Happy Thanksgiving to all !!, we ALL have a lot to be thankfull for !!
and from the workers years down the road! You cats made my week from this post!! Thats what we need so much more nowdays! my hats off to you guys! do you know of any 43' expressess or resonable sportfish for sale up there?
Quest,
Bobby Sullivan just finished one not long ago for Keith at Corolla Bait and tackle,42' Express. There is a post on here about it and he has it listed for sale, nice looking rig, single Cummins power,heat/ac etc. etc. Take a look, I think it is in this forum maybe back a couple of pages.
Good luck,
Troy
Troy, are those boats never glassed when original? how do they keep the mat from just falling down when they put it up? seems heavy i bet. and on the inside has it ever been done? i really have no idea, thats why i ask......can moisture hurt it? trap it in,
Nice looking job. I would love to see how the drink boxes and lids are made.
I worked on the 48' guthrie built wood rig for years (and our job in winter was to make sure your happy ass showed up in the winter to help at the yard also like above...) my gramp used to say to know it ya beeter pass your hand out it..'' he also handed us sandpaper to put in our hands first.. but what a feeling when they are right and look good. wood equaled worm shoes (<~~ bottom boat bait for sea going worms...hooks not needed..) cracked ribs (<~~ rough out kinda thing..) and a boat that rode like a dream and didn't leave white water where most fish ate.. billfish like them.. the Happy Day was a andy Mort great ride sexy look ... Merritts, Weavers, Manns, Lot'sa Ricky's all ride good and have all proven wood to cold mold'ed Creatures got thier boats right.. Nice job on the Boat Girls!.... opps did that again! thanks for the tip guys...
That looks like a juniper planked boat? Dont build them right like that much today. I have heard stories of old non glassed juniper cedar boats still good structually 40+ years later. A little advice tho, Since glassing new on outside, if fresh water lays in hull on inside it can work its way all the way to the out side if not glassed on inside also.Once you start epoxy sealing on wood, you have to encapsulate it completely.
bligh, thanks. thats what i would think. you do not want to create a trap. nice work to see how its done. sort of like a barn raising too. one other question troy, how do you take the pictures and get dirty with the glass at the same time?actually someones got to do it.
Troy,
I've got xmas break and then I'll graduate in May. I may move to Manteo for a year or two to fish if I can. When are you moving to Va beach?
That drink/bait box is nice. Keep those pictures rolling...
