    FURUNO GP1650WF TRANSDUCER ???

We fish in less than 100' 95% of the time and very happy with the FF locating structure and fish whether on the bottom or suspended. My problem is when we have gone to deeper water, @500'-600' the unit will lock up giving a blank screen and the menu will dissapear. I have messed with settings when the unit allows me access. The gps menu always works fine with no issues. I'll just fish using water temps, sight, and the gps contour lines showing drop offs and humps. I feel if I run over fish that I can't see, I miss a chance to work back over them. Jigging deep is out of the question at this point. Would a new 600w transome mount transducer clear this up or is the 8 year old unit on its last leg? Not alot of budget to work with and I've considered a used 585/600 or other Furuno dedicated units. Thanks, Netman

do you have a 600watt or a 1kw ducer installed?

A 1KW transducer will give you the greater depths that you are looking for

Thanks for the reply. I have a P66 type transducer and the 1650 is a 600w sounder. I was told that it should give me a depth reading. It just locks out. I should have taken pictures to show how it behaves. I only got out 2 times to the deep this year and thats the only time it does this. We got the boat used and it has done this on every trip to the deep in 3 years. I've never had it work. The biggiest problem is I can't make any adjustments once it goes into this blank mode. The sonar menu will not come up to change 200/50, manual settings, depth range ect. and the gps works to perfection. Once inside the drop off it reads again and works as to be expected. Could the P66 be damaged or is it not capable?
    Thanks again, Netman

Is this a 200 to 50 Hz Transducer and when you go deeper, do you change it to 50 HZ?
    MirrOlure when big fish count!

Exactly! The first trip out I worked inside to a depth where it functioned and made the changes with no success once back in deeper water. Even set it in a 0-100 ft setting and it stopped reading. When boating in shallow water on 200hz I will set it on 0-15 ft for a better shallow water depth finder and when I get deeper it won't read the bottom/depth but the top 15' still shows fish. Also tried the 200/50hz split screen with no luck. Figured it would work the same when offshore, not real sure how this all works or should work. I've been on other small boats with simular setups without the problems and reading depth fine although sometimes jumping from 2,000' to 3,000' on the canyon wall.
Thanks for all the help here guys/ladies, Netman

    Netman,
are you sure you are getting clean water under the transducer at all times ?
I have the 600w through hull on my navnet and it will do the same thing if I am fishing in rough seas and the boat rolls and I get any kind of cavitation. It loses the screen but I get it back. I have had to turn the unit off before to get it to read again but not very often.
My 600 reads good over the edge other than that.
It could be the transom unit is mounted too high, just a thought,
    Troy

I can get depth running 28kts and lose bottom somewhere around 600' but have read 2,000' a few seconds trolling when messing with it. Trolling upto 7kts is fine inshore in 200hz and have played with 50hz as well inshore just don't use it. I'll check as it is located just inside the trim tab.

Chatted with you and capt. from the DUKE back in Oct. catching blues in the channel just outside the inlet. The nxt day we took our little Hydra Sports to the Point and found a pile of blackfin. Landed 45 or more without the ff using only gps/temp. to keep us in the fish. Fished with 2 other boats in site til 10:00 or so before the fleet found us. Thanks, Netman

Enjoyed talking with you guys that day !
Just looked at your video you put up also, funny, For some reason I felt like had been in most of those places before ! Nice recount of your week at the Cove. Even with the weather you guys pulled off a remarkable trip, good going.

I fished out around the AR wreck you caught your Jacks on yesterday and caught some nice Kings.

Getting ready to take the boat up to Va.Beach for the Winter Striper season.
    Take care,
    Troy
