Remember FRP (fiberglass) tanks are susceptible to ethanol problems. Jimmy have you dealt with any boats that coated the inside of FRP tanks with Phenol Novalac Epoxy to prevent Ethanol issues? Just curious.

Jimmy I think you are talking about Poultice corrosion.

People never want to hear they have a bad tank- "Oh I spilled some fuel when I changed the filter" etc etc etc.

Nice Pics Jimmy.

I mounted a new tank in my Scarab 34SS last year. I also had a ton of questions so I called Wellcraft and was really surprized of all the help and advice I got. I ended up buying a custom made tank from IMCO. They gave a warranty, had thick material, USCG approved, fair price, quick delivery, and was very friendly to deal with. I ended up coating the tank before installing it with a coat of epoxy, and then finished it off with a coat of bedliner for PU trucks. I then mounted it and foamed only the corners, leaving the bottom free (with the exception of the pads it is resting on...) to be able to dry. I bolted the tank in from the stringers as pr Wellcrafts advice. It looks good and seem to me to be a much better solution than the original configuration.

Below is a picture of the old tank, which passed the pressure test.. . Next is the tank from IMCO...

Sorry, you are correct. I had forgotten about that. Its been a few years, since I had a gas boat.

more on this...

we discussed the tanks themselves...but...what about the hosing... hosing being the fuel fill hose(s),the vent hoses(s)and the fuel feed lines...

here's what the fuel fill hoses looked like...this is gonna scare you to death-trust me...if you've got an older rig, this is exactly what your fill hose is gonna look like-think about that next time you put 100g of gas in the boat...there's quite a few of you guys out there running older rigs, this is what the fill hoses will look like when they're removed.the hoses will chafe through, especially on the gradys, the hoses run through the stringers, the hose will have some silicone on the stringer side of it,there's nothing to protect the hose from rubbing through...other mfg's do the same thing...sometimes the hose is impossible to replace with out cutting into the deck-on the gradys this isn't true, the hoses can bereplaced without cutting into the deck...late model wellcrafts are a completley different story...
again, pay attention to this, this can and will save your life...

same holds true for the fuel lines,if you've got an older rig,the new formulated fuel could break down the fuel lines in your rig, causing engine problems, and serious engine damage...i reccomend all you guys take a look at this stuff...it's better to be safe than sorry

now...i got a nasty em,ail from someone-claimed i was putting this stuff up here just to scare people into getting work done...the person also claimed i must not have must buisness to stoop this low...same guy, here, didn't sign his name to his email, nice huh ???
well....truth is,i've got plenty of work, certainly don't need anymore,a few of you can testify to that i put this stuff up to show someone exactly what and how things are,it's called saving someone the problem, makes sense huh ??? the last thing in the world i wanna see is a big disaster with someone concerning their boat...you just may be my dock neighbor...get it ??? this is all to educate someone, nothing more, nothing less...
what you get from me is my experience, not guess work from reading invoices from the service department,or second hand information, you get real world experience...

this is great info

especially if u had to put in new fuel tanks like i did and did it all by my self, if was a friggin nightmare. If i knew this info the job would of been easier due to my heads up preventive maitenance-this is stuff marine people never tell u, but if u know what to look for, u are not only safer but head of problems.

thanks for this info

Jimmy,

I guess I better look at my tank in my 1991 Sea OX. Have you ever swapped one out in a 23' Sea OX walkaround? Just wondering If I'll need to do any cutting. Looks like the whole center of the deck will come out easily. Maybe a good winter project.
