    Fuel polishing, tank cleaning

Just finished changing my fuel filters Dahl 200's and the bowls looked pretty bad, thinking of getting the tanks cleaned but at the moment they have 300 gal. of diesel in them. I was going to set up a remote pump and and multiple filter system and polish my self but I have a feeling that the stuff in the tanks will still be in there without cleaning the tanks them selves any body know of a service in the Jersey area or any thoughts on this? The boat was purchased last fall and the previous owner passed away so I don't know how long the fuels been sitting.

I seem to recall reading about a dockside service that does this. I know the commercial guys get it done. Can't remember if it was in natl Fisherman or Boats and Harbors.$0.02

    Fuel Polishing

Critter SP Tanks has a mobile truck with a 400 or 500 gal. tank and they do a good job.We (jersey cape) have the same unit but do not do mobil. No one else in N.J. has the same equipment and there is a difference. It will be money well spent the system makes even the nastiest fuel look new. give sp a call, if you have any questions give me a call (609)965-8650 Wayne, Jersey Cape yachts

Thanks for the info I will give them a call, not crazy about these filters SOB to change. Not real confident running offshore with the way the bowls looked when I changed the filters out.

    Fuel Polishing

    Critter:

Fuel polishing (how did it come to be called "polishing"?) is essentially filtering the fuel many times over. What that means is that the contamination (usually algae) is filtered down to the design size of the filters used, and the truly microscopic bits are left behind. If untreated, the problems return. I would filter to 2 microns, then treat with a biocide such as Biobor. When you get around to it, pitch those Dahl filters into the nearest dumpster and install Racor water separators.

SP Tanks = Great Job, Great Guys, Very Clean and safe...

Back in April I had the team from SP tanks treat 400 gallons of diesel that I was concerned about being saturated with water. The guys covered my entire cockpit in a plastic floor covering; very clean and considerate team. The process took the better part of the day (this depends a great deal on how accesible your fuel sending units are).

The system is a closed loop; and they take samples of the before and after; imagine cranberry juice before; and bright red cherry koolaid after. My cost was a little over a $1.50 per gallon (and my sending units were a pain in arse). And never even lost a drop of the fuel to the ground, water or my boat; very enviro friendly and safety oriented.

Again I would fully recommend these guys with out a question.

I have one of these. I use it every year when the boat goes back in the water.

My fuel tank has a fill port on top of it and I can get straight down to the bottom. Just suck it up and cycle back through the main fill port.

I had SP tanks come and do the polishing, very professional and did a great job. The fuel looked great after they were done.
