Floor Hatch Replacment NEED YOUR OPINION

I bought a floor hatch from WestMarine and it did not work well for my application. This is what I bought:

I need to purchase a high quality hatch that will cover this hole in the front of my boat. The measurements for the opening in the deck is roughly ~27 3/4 x 10 3/4~

Anyone have any ideas/experience replacing a hatch with something that worked well for you?

How about some starboard and a stainless piano hinge?

starboard does not have the strength for hatches you may stand on. I may suggest a piece of Coosa board, epoxied and painted. If you need a piece I can hook you up. they stuff cannot rot and will hold screws. how thick does it have to be?

I'm using similar plastic access hatches by Bomar with no problems for my application. You might want to check them out on the Bomar/Pompanette website. The company has several models with a 11-3/8" x 28-3/8" opening which should cover the existing hole in your boat.

I'm not sure what problem you had with your hatches and can't tell if these will be any different. These hatches obviously weren't designed for a watertight deck application.

Then again, I've never been successful finding a hatch that is watertight. I have about seven thousand dollars invested in hatches from several manufacturers on my boat and they all leak to some extent.

You can get starboard up to 1 1/2" thick.... I don't know how deep that recess is but 1" starboard would be plenty strong to stand on.
