Are you offshore, inshore? Most guys will say Furuno. I have a Lowrance that's coming off this winter. That was a fairly decent inshore sounder for 500 bucks. Very good detail in say 50 or less FOW, but lost quality in deeper water.

Putting a Garmin on the boat. Not as good as Furuno, but a lot less money.

I have heard the Raymarine sounders are OK. The comapny in general is a pain, though (no personal experience). I think with Ray, you either love 'em or hate 'em.

    Hope his helps

If you can spend the money and have the space, a Furuno FCV1100 w/ a 1kW is about as good as it gets.

    Furuno

Thanks for the reccomendations! I agree that is a sweet unit, however I dont have the room on my boat for it, or 3000.00 I am looking for something alot cheaper maybe not the best but good. I do fish offshore but i like to target cod, stripers, and shark also.

Has anyone had any luck with the northstar explores series fishfinders?

    thanks
