Check out the Raymarine A series. 3 screen sizes, and I have played with them a bit.. Great hi def ff and navionics cartography. Be sure to check them out along with other makes.

I happen to be a Garmin fan. The 500 series would be a good start. You could also go up to the 3000 series or even 4000 series if you have the budget. This would allow for future expansion with Radar if that might be in your long term plans.

I would check with Jim at BOE Marine for guidance as to what will fit your needs. Make sure that you consider that Garmin also comes with the high detailed maps. Other manufacturers may require that you by the c-map or navionics data cards for about $200.

    Good luck.

You should think about which feature is most important to you, FF or GPS. If FF then the Lowrance HDS or new Raymarine A Series are what I would look at. If chartplotter then the Garmin units will be hard to beat. Also, what screen size are you after? If 5" then Garmin, Ray, and Low all have something to offer. If over 5" then Ray and Low are the 2 options I would look into.
