Fish Box Insulation: 41 Viking

this is an idea that I have been thinking about as well.

but if you place insulation around the outside of the box, then won't that make it impossible to pull the fishbox out without removing the insulation?

I think the goal is to fit it so i can be removed

I have a 1986 41 Viking with in-deck boxes. I insulated the fiberglass boxes on all sides (outside) with 1/2 " thick rigid foam board insulation (available at home centers) and then taped the entire outside with silver/metal HVAC tape, not cloth duct tape, and I could hold ice all day in the boxes. It would help if you could insulate the lids also but you would have to glass that in to stop it from getting damaged by fish and to be able to clean it. Last year, I had aluminum boxes fabricated because the flanges on the fiberglass boxes failed and I used the foil/bubble wrap insulation and it flat out didn't work. I tore it off and am now applying the foam board I used the first time. My 2 cents...Karl

Did this on a boat I owned. It is simple, inexpensive, and very effective. I used the same method to insulate the inside lid of a bait freezer and it made a huge difference.

Aluminun transfers heat or cold very efficiently, thats why miracle thaw works so well, the bubble wrap isn't enough for aluminum.
