Fiberglass repairs needed, great winter work

My Best friend just bought a 30' sunny briggs and is leaving Palm Beach first week on January bringing it back to Charleston, SC. The boat needs a bunch of fiberglass repair work needed. Toe rail and bumpers and cockpit deck needs to be repaired as well as engine room compartment. Boat also needs long board sanding and painting. Looking for someone who is great at fiberglass repair and needs the work. Not looking to pay no where near boatyard prices. looking for a flat rate contract price. Would be a great job for someone to get them through the winter months. He will buy all the supplies. He will entertain taking elsewhere long as price and work are guaranteed. No boat yards, to much money and they always seem to double there price. Must have good references and past work photos.

well your first post out and your looking for cheap...

not a good way to treat the boat in my opinion. yes there are guys out there like me that build / re-build but why in 2010 do people ask for someone who knows what they are doing to go cheap? I was always told once cheap , always cheap.. so I ask you why do you not ask for people to come look at the job and give a bid on the work and offer a fair price for great work.. it is winter time now also and epoxy and fiberglass take longer drying, rain makes things harder and then at the end of the day the guy who is doing the work can not even buy a tool to replace the ones he burnt up on your opps your buddies boat.. just read your post before you go out hunting help it will offend the ones who actually do it right... may make the difference on having someone know what they are doing to having someone drill holes in a fuel tank... just saying you will get what you asked for ...

You are getting some good advise here. Please don't take this the wrong way but there is no way to do what he wants on the cheap. If he wants cheap he should have bought a sailboat and done the work himself... I read on the other forum where he wants a paintjob, new power and repair all the bumpers and the toerail and a new cockpit floor , all for 10 grand. A real dose of reality is that that will never happen. How about posting some pictures for us to see what kind of a can of worms he has. The work that someone wants on a boat is never straight forward like just replacing a cockpit floor. You take the old floor up and you see other stuff that needs replacing like fuel tanks and other structural items. This is usually where the "double the price" comes in. What does he want when the work is done... A sweet boat or some jumbled together mess? Be more specific about what the needs/ wants are and we can help him/ you out.

I agree and thanks for your reply. I do know that he has gotten two quotes from 2 well respected yards in south fla and both quoted between $18,000 and $20,000 for the glass work and also th epaint job. The problem is that most people finance there fun and borrow money to either buy boats or borrow money to upfit or renovate them. He doesn't. Maybe this is why he owns his boats outright. This is actually his 3rd boat. He currently owns a 51 whiticar and a 31 bertram that both are out of the country. He's like every other guy that worked hard to earn his money, work hard to get it, but work even harder to keep it.
Back to my question, if anyone out there is good at fiberglass work and is looking to make it through the winter months, let me know. Boat shed rented today in charleston, sc. Fully enclosed with power and heat.

He bought a wooden boat. Not a fiberglass boat. It needs mostly wood work and then some thin fiberglass and epoxy. then fairing compound. then primer. then paint. The toe rail is mostly wood also. No one is going to give a flat rate on the cheap. If you find a flat rate on the cheap and take it? You will pay later. I saw you post on THT about your engine upgrade. I tried to give you some insight to the boat and was ignored. That boat that your friend bought on the cheap, because it was in disrepair for years, was almost sunk being towed behind a mother ship in a fierce storm that was so rough they could not load it up on the big boat. This was in the 80s I believe with my old but good memory. I heard it was full of water but still tied off to mother ship when they bailed it out. I think after that they decided it was not to be used with the mother ship. It was for sale a few times and had such little fuel capacity because of the original needs. {Mothership support always close} no one wanted it. I also heard that the deck was so low that it takes on water too easy. I hear the boat was bought for 10,000. It will take maybe 5 times that to make it whole. You have a very custom wood boat that was beat to **** and you want to fix it on the cheap thinking it is a fiberglass boat. Epoxy and 2 part paint aint cheap either. The Know How and many many hours to fix a wooden custom boat properly wont come cheap either.

we had Savage Boats whn I was a kid in Westport, Wa. ..

my grandfather also owned Bob Allens Deep Sea Charters.. he had a saying of "we treat you in so many good ways your bound to like one of them!".. the other sign on the side of the wall was "Take your bull $hit somewhere else!" .. that sign was for the very few people who would cross his line.. now you come back and justifiy your original post... oh my I think I will just leave it as it is now because AS a Fisherman and builder it is 29 degrees out now and I will head to the shop and be glad I would never touch your buddies boat... and the poor choice of buying a old beat up poorly designed boat... I will think of you tonight and thank the good Lord that I have enough sense to not go cheap..

life is hard and you get out of it what you put in so I say .. You should take the job since you know the cost and what it takes.. have a great day.. and justifying yourself sounds kinda like a little spoiled girl who is going to push an issue .. I guess it is 2010 and they let people crawl through the cracks sometimes..
