    Extended Bracket or not

    I just brought a 1989 231 mako ... with a 2005 300 hp yahmaha ... I am planning to rebuilt the transome for 2 reason
    1) Flexes a little
    2) Whan to increase the height along side of motor to reduce amount of water splashing in the low transome.

Someone suggusted why not just have transome one height & add an extended bracket with swim platform (30"x72")
I've heard good & bad about extended brackets... I have enough power & enough room.

Then there is the issue of fiber glass ($3000 vs aluminum. $1200 - $2500

Plus could porposie and not run write .

The boat run great the way it now layout.

Should I just do the transome or also add an extended bracket.

the way I am thinking the simpler the better

    any sugguestions

    Joe ...

you were on classic mako I think. That boat is amazing if you close in the transom and add a semi displacment bracket. look to miami for custom welding dot com stainlees marine dot com or who ever you want to. the bracket should compliment that boat on weight and all around ride. i still re build classic makos and you can build a neat fishbox or baitwell in the transom when you do this. the 300 has some weight but not that bad. the 25' 1980/2008 I have finished has a single 250 e-tek and thats way plenty power for the 25 even because of weight to hp ratio. the year boat to weight issues you will have because of the transome height of the boat due to engine weight will make ya pucker up some in a sea. make sure you have tabs also

I rebuilt a boat last year. I choose the bracket over the transom mount.

    1. Have more room in the boat. With the motor back a little you have the full room of the boat. It is nice to have a full transom. to lean against.

    2. With the swim platform you can step over the transom and have something solid to stand on if needed.

    Cons -

The motor sticks out a little farther and sometimes is a problem fighting fish if they run from one side of the boat to the other across the transom.

By it being out on a bracket it makes a little harder to fix if on the water. (Hopefully you won't have to) but with the swim platform you do have something nice to stand on.

A fiber glass bracket (armstrong, or potter built) has flotation. I believe it is called a positive flotation bracket. The aluminum bracket are cheaper but do not have any flotation. (At least the ones I found)

I chose the bracket to get the extra room at the back of the boat. And love having a full closed transom. With the full transom you can make a transom fish box or have extra storage. Also, water cannot wash over the transom unless I make a very bad driving error.

Good luck with which ever way you decide.

    i'm a little confused here...so...bear with me...

the transom has some flex, right ?? so,it needs some attention, read that as recore it...and you don't like the low "notched" transom,is that correct ??

    if i were you,clearly,you gotta recore the transom,right ??
it's just as easy to make the transom one height and do away with the notch...adding"knees" to the transom isn't a bad idea, this will provide extra support from the stringers up the transom-remember,with a bracket, you increase the leverage...personally,i wouldn't use any bracket what so ever, with the exception of the brackets don herman,hermco,makes-these are fiberglass and these provide floatation to the transom area.i've installed quite a few of these on other boats, and the results have been fantastic...i've installed these on mostly gradys.the gradys are known for their scuppers being below the waterline-not a good thing,no matter what anyone tells you-it's wrong !! after the hermco bracket was installed, the scuppers are above the water line by a few inches-a few members of this board have boats that i worked on and replaced the brackets on-they can back this up...
don herman also produces a bracket that will "fill in" the notch, but, that may not be the best option for you,due to the fact your transom has considerible flex in it...
the aluminum brackets are ok,if the tub size is increased-this is what provides the extra floatation-it's all about displacement with the aluminum brackets, you need to use a special antifouling paint on them, something that quite a few guys fail to do,if you use the correct antifouling paint you shouldn't have too many problems with it...

    MAKO

JO - I HAD 1979 25 WITH A SOFT TRANSOM AND THIS IS WHAT I DID. I BOUGHT A 250 YAMAHA WITH A 30" SHAFT. CUT THE TRASOM OFF BUILT A NEW ONE WITH A HIGHER NOTCH GLASSED IT IN WITH KNEES TO THE STRINGERS AND I WAS HAPPY WITH IT. I DID NOT WANT TO CHANGE THE RIDE. SOFT, BUT WET. A FRIEND OF MINE DID THE SAME PUT A PAIR OF 175 HP EVINRUDES AND IT DID NOT RIDE AS NICE AS MINE. THE EARLY BOATS WERE 25 KNOT BOATS NOT 35 KNOT BOATS. A BRACKET CAN POSSIBLY CHANGE THE RIDE .
BYRD - DID IT CHANGE THE RIDE? DOES THE BOW RIDE A LITTLE HIGHER. THE FULL TRANSOM AND A FISH BOX MUST BE NICE.
I SOLD THE 25 MAKO 6 YEARS AGO AND GOT $20,000 FOR IT ON A TRADE IN AND THE MARINA FLIPPED IT IN A WEEK.

What I am leading towards is this...
    1) I like the way it rides now
    2) I am replacing the exisiting Transome for my 25 Inch shaft keep the same notch around the engine but have transome come all the way up on each side to reduce some water intrusion.
    3) I do not think I will be adding the extended bracket.

    thxs for your response

Not sure if it changed my ride. I never ran the boat with the bracket. I got the hull and redid it and then put a bracket on it. It does ride a little high in the bow though. The boat I did was originally a cuddy cabin and I converted it to a center console.

I posted my progress on this site. here is the link.

    Seabird update

It rides good, but it is the only way I have ever run my boat.
