    easiest motor to work on?

Okay, I am about to give up on Yamaha, Evinrude, Mercury, etc. Not today or tomorrow, but when this 300 HPDI goes, i am going to be looking for the simplest motor I can find.

Do any of you guys have any recommendations for the best motor a shade tree mechanic can work on himself? Where we live, the outboard mechanics are basically crud. They charge $ 100 an hour, they don't have the parts in stock, and in most cases the motors run worse after they spend a few hours on them.

I am okay doing a lot of my own engine work. I have rebuilt a bunch of motorcycles, cars, trucks, airplanes, and yes, two stroke outboards over the years.

So my new philosophy will be to find the outboard that is the easiest to work on yourself, with NO factory help at all.

Buy the parts, the manual, and fix it.

right now, from what I have heard, I am leaning strongly toward Suzuki's, but would appreciate any feedback.

Carbuerated v8 350 I/O merc or probably an IB. I know its not an outboard but it is definately one of the easiest to work on.
As far as outboards I would think anything that had as little electronics as possible, without a scanner theres just to many stupid little things to diagnose. I always liked my old merc 250 2 strokes nice and simple.

    chevy 350!

match it with a electronic ignition, 2- msd electric boxes (almost makes ya look like a nascar creature) couple it up with a merc outdrive and your good. smooth running engines especially if you fresh water cool them. replace the bellows every two years.

    OX66 Yamaha

They are reliable with a little owner supplied maintenance. You can buy them cheap, because people stupid like me! sell them still running inorder to move up to BOOM hpdis BAD or higher maintenance more computer control 4 stroke yam that I now own. My f225 is running but its not near as easy or cheap to keep running without yam techs?
