Here's a sweet 2005 30 foot Calvin Beal for sale in my neck of the woods. This would do the trick and is in your price range....

Take a look at Wesmac boats . I have fished a few of them as well as BHM, Duffy,JC,Norther Bay,Bruno Stillman and H&H and I like the wesmac the best out of all of them. They are also pretty fast .

Wesmac boats are sick. But if he doesn't want to spend a ton of $$$$$ that might make up his mind!

If you are looking for a good sea worthy boat for not a lot of dollars, check out Capt. Squid Boat Works. Leonard Rigsby can build you a very nice boat in the 28 to 32 ft. range , or anything up to 60 ft. charter style boat, no frills for a great price. His boats definately raise fish. "Impulse" on the Morehead City waterfront is one of Leonard boat. Catches plenty of bluefins and won the Big rock a few years back. Consistantly catches billfish. Worth a phone call! 252-723-3612 Cell, Home 252-729-1437.

Unfortunately not this year Dunn. It's still in the works, though. I have my eyes on a few that may be considered at the end of the 09 season if they're still around but I'm really still trying to figure out exactly what we want.

We're having a 31 Willis Beal built up now. She's much bigger than the duffy 31 for less money.

Good luck on your search. Boat builders, and dealers are getting hungry.

    Ride between the two:

A down east will be slower generally, but will require less hp to push her and will sip fuel compares to a carolina style boat. Most downeast boats have a bigger keel then most boats, this will help it track well in sloppy head seas, but can also make the boat squirlly in a beam to. A bigger keel will also keep her more steady on the drift. If you fish offshore this type of boat will take you longer to get out, but will burn less fuel making it cheaper to get offshore, and if seas kick up it will get you home safely in just about anything. Also, most downeasts have atleast a 3 sides enclosed helm or a fully enclosed helm, this aloows you to get out of the elements if it is hot, raining, or cold and windy. This also gives you the ability to have helm air and heat to be comfy on longer rides.

A carolina boat will be quicker but that comes at a price, burning more fuel. Although most carolina boats are decent on fuel, compared to most down east boats they burn more, this is due to how the hull forms are designed to ride as well as their overall speeds. If you make longer runs this boat will get you there quicker giving you less run time and more fishing time, but it will act more like a conventional boat and will break waves, not ride through them like a downeast. Most carolina boats have either an express style helm and are open with a hardtop and a canvas enclosure which is nice if your in warmer elements, you can have helm air/heat added but it is less efficient. This helm layout will put you in the action making it easier to run the boat on the troll offshore, a down east will seclude you making manuveuring harder. An exterior helm would eliminate that but adds cost and takes up space. As for ride, most carolina boats are good riding boats, but not all. A deeper v hull will slice a wave better, a flatter transom deadrise will be more efficient, but you will not break waves as easily and may have a slight pound or shutter when seas are rough, it really depends on the hull itself, each one can be very different. A flatter deadrise hull will drift better and rock less, more deadrise will be more tender drifting but will ride better. With any planing hull you need to decide whats more important, trolling vs drifting characteristics, or a compramise between the two. And efficiency vs calmer/smoother ride or a compromise of both. A carolina boat will be custom and can have any combination of these characteristics if your builder knows what hes doing, and most do.

You need to think about how you will use the boat and in what conditions. Do you want an enclosure or not, is being near the cockpit and being able to communicate with your crew important. Would you rather get to fish quicker and fish more or not worry about time and take it slower but cost you less per trip. Each boat will have a fairly open cockpit and can be designed to your specs so in that aspect they are both fairly equal. Both style of boat are great hardcore fishing machines but they both have their advantages, it just depends which suits your style of fishing and current needs better. Either way you cannot go wrong, but I'd honestly recommend deciding on a size and price range, see what fits that well and compare that way, then see if you can sea trial them, most builders bring boats to boat shows and will offer sea trials of models they currently build so this is your best opprotunity and I'm sure there are many owners of these style boats that will let you come for a short ride as well. you need to be comfortable behind the wheel, you may not like the setup of one once you run it, on paper and in your mind it might be more appealing then in real life.

Good luck and let us know what you desice to buy.
