Not many things that I can say that I NEVER do, but this is one of them. After servicing an engine I ALWAYS run the engine up to RPM and Temperature to make sure that oil filters do not have a leak. I've got a sailboat that I tried to finish up on today after an extensive going over (owner just bought the used boat). I cranked her up all sounded good. Went down immediately after making sure I had water flow out of the stern. OH NO, the filter "popped"(hardly ever happens) off the filter assembly nipple, shut her down. Tried another filter just to make sure it wasn't a bad threading job on the filter, it popped off in my had. I remover the oil filter assembly from the side of the block and it appeared that someone previous, had really cranked down on a filter and damaged the assembly. Long story short, if I didn't follow the practice of ALWAYS checking a filter, I would have probably "owned" this engine.
Guess what I'm saying is that I've seen "mechanic's" (I'm using the term very loosely here) and owners. After changing the oil and filter just shut the "hood" and off they go, assuming that all is well. Assuming is a very dangerous thing. Oh and by-the way, Capt. you can't go sailing today. Frank
