Diesel outboard update?
Hey guys is this happening? Anything on the grape vine your side of the pond, release dates etc ? costs? Has anyone followed this up or is it a pipe dream! www.megoutboard.com/index.php
nothing has changed on the web site since last year would be an answer to allot of dreams
Tryin' to be the man, my dog think's I am. marine diesel service owner
I haven't heard anything myself,
The problem when they (I can't remember who "they" were) tried this the first time was cost and power to weight ratio. If I'm not mistaken, this was tried before 4 strokes really got started, and weight was everyone's concern. I'd be curious to see how this play's out. With the reduction of weight and the increase of horsepower coming out of smaller power plants now aday's. I think a problem may come with the actual drive part's (shaft's,bearing's, gear's, etc.. ) for the additional torque load that diesel's generally put out. Bigger component's equal more weight. I'd like to see it work out. Frank,SeaPower
For some reason I want to say it was tohatsu or nissan, a fella in our marina had two on a houseboat about 65 hp or so. He was always working on the filter system, probably because they did not run much
That engine sure does sound like a good idea. I do hope it works out for them. I think it would be safer than gas and looking at their site cheaper to operate.
i'm actually very interested in this topic...i have the perfect boat to try one of these engines out...just sitting in the yard waiting for her new power whenever we decide what to do with her.....i wonder if there will be any info on these at the atlantic city boat show???
I sent an e-mail to the Manufacturers and this is the response I got. They got back to me pretty quick, which is always a good sign, and it sounds like they have a solid production date. I did encourage Don, the Pres, to join the website and tell the tale for himself so maybe we will hear from him at some point? Here is the e-mail he sent me back...
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt even though he did call me "Jane"...
Hello Jane-
Thank you for your interest in Maritime Engineering Group's new Vision Turbo Diesel Outboard. Currently we are gearing up for production which will begin in summer 2009. The outboards that we will be producing will be in the range of 115hp-230hp and will meet all emission standards. When we get closer to our production date pricing will be available.
Again thank you for your interest, please visit us at www.megoutboard.com for future updates and specs.
Infact it will run on kerosene, diesel and gasoline. I believe they are only making it in a 45 hp? The technology is the same on all their other engines so I think its just a matter of demand for larger engines. Now heres the best part. You already are the owner of these. If you want to run one? You will have to join the US Navy Seals or a few select other Special Operations groups,Rangers,Delta. Also It is light weight for a diesel. Etec. Thats right Etec sells a multi fuel OB to the DOD for use on their ribs.
The only problem I see is the cost of diesel vs Gas.Why would someone opt for a slower, heavier and more expensive outboard. They would be great for marine construction or commercial fishing though.
