Anyone know anything about these engines?
They are re-built with about 500 hrs on them.

Reason we are looking is we blew an engine on the way home from Bimini and are looking into a better boat for doing the kind of fishing the owner is getting into.

Tough to blow one of them. In 5000 hours or more with them under my decks I cracked a head and some turbo seals... along with other little odds and ends.

What type engine did you pop? When you say blown. Did you bust a crank or throw a rod? Swallow a valve? Lose oil pressure? There are a lot of things that can happen.
The 671 is one of the toughest sob engines out there and are fairly easy to rebuld. Probably some drop in rebuilts around too... I've seen a load of them with 20-30000 hours on them and running fine...

Thats what I've heard about them too. Anyone else with info, please let me know.

We blew a gas crusader. Its the newer 6.0 liter. 300 hours later there is a hole in the block just above the oil pan that I can fit my fist in. There are broken rods and pieces of piston in the bildge along with about a gallon of oil. So the boat is sitting in stuart waiting to get pulled. Luckly the warranty is covering it all.

Well that explains blowing a mill... All gas inboard makes are on my shit list anymore. Blowing up a couple sets of brand new Volvos in the Reel Delight left curt and I with a bad taste in my mouth. I could go buy a good condition Albie with gas for less than half of what I have invested in mine but it will never happen.

If you take of them Detroits they will last forever. We run a 8V92 the most I turn her is 1825 supposed to turn them 2000 but it seems much over 1800 they start to leak oil pretty bad.

I have heard alot of god and bad about the Detriot 671TI. What horsepower are the ones youre looking at? I believe at 450 is about as much horsepower as they should put out. Great engines have been around forever. J&T up this way is selling new blocks for about 10k.

THE HEAT THAT THE TI'S GENERATE MAKES THEY NEED A LOT MORE ATTENTION THEN THE 671 NATURAL. HOW OLD ARE THE BLOCKS?

What specfically do you want to know?? I have 1989 vintage twin J&T 671-TI with wet turbos in a Ocean 44 SS and have done quite a bit of maintenance on them over the last two years.

If you're looking for all around type info, visit boatdiesel.com ...a wealth of info on there.

Otherwise ask away and I'll try to help.

Like others have said, these engines are like tanks. Just have to be somewhat careful when you start turbocharging them. Most problems are generated by operator error (e.g...running them too hard) or in the initial set-up (over-propping) .
