Well said Iguana. I do not know much about wood boat building, but it seems as though Cheeks knows alot more than most. I for one, appreciate the opposing opinions and am eager to learn more.

Ok, this is my last post on this..... and Iguana I agree with you on movement, but heres the other side.. You take a planked boat and glass her, guess what? No more movement... You take a planked boat and laminate plywood to it and then glass over that and you have a strong superstructure... there is no way for it to move. Its no different than plywood over plywood.. take Ritchie Howells boats, its three layers of plywood laminated together in different angles to each other.... Just looked at the new Canyon Runner.....Drool Drool ... what a beautiful rig thats gonna be!!!! Anyhow Mr. Cheeks may be the best thing that ever happened to boat building, but I personally don't think its right to bash some of the best boat builders on the east coast... I would still like to know where his expertise comes from as others have asked with no answer? If he is an authority on the subject, he should not be afraid to let people know! Making accusations is easy, but backing them is the hard part. I certainly don't know all about building boats and I'm open minded enough to learn something new, but don't just tell me its not a good idea or its not smart or its ignorant with out facts to back it up!

Fishskipper,
I think Cheeks must work for a builder hence the 'sanding boards' comment. My guess would be that he works for a serious, old school craftsman type that would not appreciate his name/brand being tossed around on the internet. I agree that in theory the multiple layers (plank, ply, glass) sounds like a really good composite. I just don't understand how it accomodates movement well, or if maybe it does not move - i.e. the glass tensile strength keeps the wood from moving, the amount of moisture getting through combined with the junipers low expansion is irrelevant, or there is enough elasticity to accomodate. I also have no idea how many boats are buil this way. I do not have first hand expertise on planked boats being glass and am curious as to how that would work. I have heard of some type 5200 process being used to restore planked hulls and I thought this was to accomodate movement. It would be interesting to hear what cheeks says about this, perhaps it only works with the strip built hulls? Fortunate One, Good luck with the launch. Did not mean to imply that your boat was unsound. Just trying to learn a little. In general this discussion does make me wonder why you wouldn't just do the whole thing out of plywood (other than it wouldn't look like F1s boat) |

This is just a matter of opinion of construction method or if it was truly a unacceptable process with in the industry, Paul Mann Boats wouldn't sell.
Just as with fiberglass boats where I'm involved, many debate which is better, best or just plain junk as for materials and method of lay up. It is unfortunate that people, some usually without a clue will create such negativity towards a post that is put up for people to review. Maybe someone needs to go Paul Mann's yard and tell them their hulls are junk and explain why. |
