Thumbs down Custom Paul Mann

It always amazes me that those who profess to "know it all" don't have the nerve to either state their name or credentials.

To say that to expose your credentials would relegate you to "Board sanding" is curious to me. Perhaps you are truly a great craftman with an ego bigger than your clout or reputation, or ability to back up your claims.

One can only wonder what you will gain personally from your claims?

Sorry for the 'tude SFC!

Cool Custom Paul Mann

Hey Rock-

As a custom builder, we share the pain in this lousy market.
I am sure you can relate to someone denegating your reputation that you work so hard to earn.

Nothing wrong with that contender. I used to fish out of White Point Marina then Windmill Pt in a Rabalo then a 32' Victory. I loved those days on the bay.

Thanks

I'm with the Phat Mann.

I run/own a few businesses so I know first hand that it's not easy to build and maintain a good reputation in order to get repeat business and many times it’s repeat business that makes a business stable.

Paul Mann seems to have a nice business with a good following and more importantly from what I know, he has an impeccable reputation for turning out a very nice product, tournament winning boats, and it apparently provides him with repeat customers. So much so that his portfolio will soon consist of larger and more expensive yachts.

I'm willing to bet that the man that is having that beautiful 76' boat built probably knows Paul Mann's reputation and quality of construction more than our Mr. Cheeks here.

I do not know the man myself nor have I dealt with his company. I have talked to someone that purchased a Custom Carolina and he does know Paul Mann and this gentlemen said that if he could afford to buy another Custom Carolina boat it would be a Paul Mann boat. I have a lot of respect for that individual and if he said Mann builds one of the best boats on the market, I for one believe him.

I've always liked to looks of Paul Mann boats.

Attempting to unjustly tarnish someone's business, especially from someone that apparently can not or is not willing to back up accusations, is low class in my book.

lousy market for sure. I am fortunate to have a commercial construction business too. and as for one's reputation... AMEN.

Fortunately for the Mann's, someone who is going to drop that much hard earned coin has already been successful in business and takes anon. tips with a grain of salt. Business smarts allow you to filter an enormous volume of data, complete efficient research, and make critical decisions.

If and when i am in the market i will call someone like you for part of my research. Not just use a thread on a fishing web site (no offense John)

ps edit: i do love my Contender. heck of a boat. makes lesser boats look plain silly when it kicks up the 3-5 square waves in the Ches bay and we are cruising by at 35

but i'm gonna start re-posting my logic. phat man........that's phat! and now that i know his wife's name is robin.........that's good enough for me.

Yes, I can read. If my memory is correct the Gougeon boys in their book say they never built a boat with wider than Inch and a Quater, Quarter Sawn Stock.

So why on earth do you think you can build one with 5 inch flat sawn and get away with it? Wood doesn't shrink and swell where you live?
You could build it out of ply planks scarfed, But even then you still have to flip her twice.

BTW, There is no chapter in the Gougeon books entilted "Laminating carvel boats". It probaly never occurred to them someone would even try.

I am a bad amateur boat-builder (see 16' Chris Craft Thread), mediocre carpenter and non-practicing civil engineer. From my low vantage point, I do see merit in Cheek's comments. The forces generated by expanding wood are tremendous. Comprehending what those forces would do in a composite, 3d , dynamically loaded structure is hard. I am sure many of you have heard stories of hardwood floors butted to framing in winter blowing out walls in summer. Think about that Paul Mann's planking moving 1% over a 20' beam. That would be a 2.4 inch shift with no moving joint to take the stress/strain. I don't think there is any flat-sawn board this stable.....

It doesn't look to me like Cheeks is bashing Paul Mann, per say, but seems like he is bringing up a legitimate concern with this building method. If I were writing the check for a 76' boat I would want a better defense of this building method than I have seen on this board.

Anyway, it is a good discussion if you tune out the insults.....
