Very interesting thread!

This thread crabbed my attention and has me somewhat wondering what I have been wondering for awhile. I own a Jarret Bay 43 it was the original "Builders Choice". It is a plank constructed boat as the first few Jarret Bays were. JB now builds using cold molded construction, this debate has been going on forever. I remember a few years back going to talk to the Paul Mann operation with a good friend of mine who at the time was shopping boat builders. We talked to Paul for the better part of a day about his construction beliefs which I found to be very interesting. I recently visited Sonny Briggs and got his views. Some of the best builders of Carolina boats all mentioned above vary in beliefs, one not being wrong over the other. Their boats have all been around for quite some time. I believe it is a matter of opinion on this topic! Structures of all sorts are built using different methods. I believe that with boats, like many other types of construction they are built different but may all be good construction. Not to say that there is not bad construction. I guess it depends on who you talk to. When I bought my Jarret Bay I figured it to be built the way JB builds them today. But after the survey, by a very reputable excellent surveyor, with many years of surveying Carolina boats, I found out that my boat was actually a plank boat. I asked him what he thought and he told me he would take plank construction all day over cold molded. That made me feel real good. But again I have spoken to many great Carolina builders. And their opinions differ widely. It does not mean they are all good or bad. I guess these Carolina rigs have proven that different construction could all be good. But again it depends on who you talk too. It will always be a debated topic!!!

After reading through this thread, taking all the attitudes and opinions with a grain of salt, CHEEKS statements do make some sense in THEORY.

I do find it ODD that one would make be critical of a process without at least giving some indication of their knowledge of said process, to which examples of known problems would give some validity to their claims.

Although it is obvious that Carolina Boat Builders have been using this process that CHEEKS says is wrong. And to a great degree of success with many boats being used for decades without problems. I would think that if this "ignorant" process was wrong, one could not give these boats away?

But obviously that is not the case with most using this method of building being some of the most desired boats in the Sportfishing Community. Not to mention the older boats having excellent resale values, this tells me that they are doing something right!

As with all things and stated before by some......everyone has there own opinion of whats right or wrong. But as long as this method continues to be popular, I would think that critics would understand that to fix something thats not broken would make no sense?

Thanks, I will send a few more pictures in a couple of weeks. They will show all the side frames in and most of the bow deck frames. All wood is laminated with 1/2" - 3/4" thick pieces.
