This just gets funnier as it progresses.
Quote:
Something tells me that this guy never stepped foot in a library. discription, chages, reffered, differrent, delamination, Lapsrake, possibillities, fastners, electrolosis, beeing, sheethed, Forgeting, delamination, alot, seperates, scarfed, fastners, quatersawn, sheeth, becuse, quater, totaly, differrent, Quarter, entilted, probaly, dimesionally, explination, expalin, seperate, similiar, underequiped, capitilized, contsruction, reffering, imprenting, pratical, 3 millon, Sheth. And I if I may quote Mr. Cheeks: "Lol. No definetly not. There are guys that know alot more than me." It's "definitely not" for those that passed the 5th grade. Most of us would tend to agree with that statement Mr. Cheeks. The quote posted and attributed to Ricky Scarborough speaks volumes: "Everyone thinks that their way is right, if you don't, you're in the wrong business." If I may be so bold to state, I’m willing to bet a few aforementioned builders and perhaps a naval architect or two who would tend to disagree with you. Just how many "Cheeks" built boats are floating around out there? |

I think some good points have been made here, regarding Carolina boats, more so than any other forum I've seen.
I don't claim to have any credentials for boatbuilding, but it seems that Cheeks has some valid concerns, they make sense, and it's fair for him to point these out as possible issues. I would much rather have a guy challenging a specific construction technique than someone making the claim that (any) given brand is a first tier supplier just because they sell a lot of boats, win a lot of tournaments, or are popular. Believe that and you just follow the herd right off the cliff. It's a certainty that epoxy is water (vapor) permeable, that the frames expand more than plywood when subjected to moisture, and that these three materials when bonded together will have differential stresses due to varying moisture content. Whether that results in a delamaination or a distortion of the frame, or something totally harmless, I don't know. I do know that a couple of Paul Mann's have sunk........but I think the reasons to be unrelated, like hitting things. So I think the concern is valid, and I would like to learn why this technique is so obviously preferred by this builder. They go to some significant trouble to build boats this way, and it's not done to cut corners. It takes more labor, more materials, and weighs more than a straight forward cold molded hull. BTW, I'm sure you could pick any builder, with their own unique way of building boats, and probably find something to raise an eyebrow or two, so this isn't about Paul Mann. I guess I'd like to know why glassed over plank on frame is better (or not) than cold molding, and maybe the best source for this answer is someone who builds this way.

Phat Mann
I've always admired your boat that sled is damn sweet, but you kind of pissed me off when you bumped my buds out of first last year in the Mid.LOL.
And after reading an article in Marlin Mag this morning about the 66 just confirms my opinion of Paul Mann Boats. They are nothing short of spectacular. Good luck in future tounaments and to each his own.

Whats up Phat Mann.I must submit a reply to this topic.I met Pm in 1989 when He was running the Madd Hatter( a 52.6' that he built for himself) I now own/operate this boat out of the OIFC .I have run this boat to Mex the past two yrs.I have Known Paul for the past 20yrs. He has always been there for me. It didn't matter wether it was the death of my parents, birth of my sons or just some boat work. Its a shame that He can't be here to defend himself.Maybe you could call him and enlighten him (252-473-1716).

Hey Capt. Fin:
I with you all the way on this one. BTW, we should be down next weekend. Maybe you and Chris want to go fishin with me and Amy. Just may break out those LP's. Wanna bring the Boys? Oh that is of course if you don't mind riding on a PM Custom Sport fisher. Bt the way, before I took delivery on the Phat Mann, Capt Fin and his Qualifier was our choice for an interim tornament platform and crew. This is a great ride and better crew. Look him up at OIFC. |
