Sure - when you can find an 80 x 20 autoclave in the middle of B.F.E we can start using pre-pregs too.

I think thing to keep in mind is that it possible to built a very functional, solid boat for $10.00 - $15.00/lb and although it is entirely possible to build the same hull shape at 1/2 the weight but the materials may cost 10x - not to mention the skills and equipment required. I know that some will be willing to pay the price - Many cannot or will not.

I'm complete with you on the pratical mindset. That is one of the great things about cold molded construction is you can build a strong light boat with B and C grade lumber. The problem right now is the price of epoxy!

As far the custom building goes I never cease to be amazed how many people there are with 3 millon to drop on a boat. And the first time one of there friends pass them going out they come back wanting a bigger faster one. If it was not for huge egos the custom carolina builders would still be building charter boats.

Sheth it in plastic and an a lot of electric heaters you can get it to 140. atleast in the summer.
