custom fly bridge boats 35-42 feet

What are some classic "scaled down" fly bridge boats?
Every one seems to be building them over 50' these days. Most all of the under 50 boats that are built today seem to be express boats.

There are a few classics out there like:
    Sheldon midget
    Billy Holton
Shear line 38 (a more recent build )

    Lets hear about some more...

It does not pay to build a custom FB boat that size any more. Old 37 merrits, rybos and whitakars

Are some of my favorites as old custom. I used to run a 40 whitakar and it is one of my favorite memories boating wise. I had an occasion to see the 37 shearline open FB and the lines are the best of that size boat I have seen. Most you cant seem to get the new bigger faster engines under the deck and have the propper profile.

    Classic FB's

Owned a 38 Topaz FB for 7 years. Great little boat

Classic lines. Real custom look. She is now the "Sea Jeannie" in Montauk.

Rybovich, Merritt, Whiticar built dozens which are still around. Ricky Scarborough built several 41's that are really pretty as well.

what happened to all the old charter boats? bound to be some on the market?
I looked at the two midgett boats, "restless either sold or is off the market. "free spool"
needs a crazy amount of work and is listed at 180k???

there is a pretty sweet 37 oneal for sale as well as a smaller Ricky boat.

There are some sweet deals right now on bigger boats like the about time and the Tillet boat "salvation". But how do you afford to fish a boat like that?

How sweet would a 35-38' single screw fly bridge constructed on a jig, loose a little weight and stick a cummins qsb in her?

Gamefisherman seems to build great flybridge sportfishermen in that range (http://www.gamefisherman.com/). However, they're quite expensive. Perhaps an older 41 foot Ricky Scarborough? Here is some interesting info from another Sportfishermen.com post (Ricky Scarborough 41). Jarrett Bay also made a 36 foot flybridge model early on in their existence (http://www.jarrettbay.com/carolina-c...achts/hull-04/).

I Agree, That Hatt would be a perfect boat to really customize with loads of options. For starters I would remove the hull port lights and the dated fwd. house overhang would have to go.... along with those vents. Put a nice radius on the aft bridge overhang corner, and get rid of that tripper on the bottom house trail were it meets the cover boards that all older Hatts have. "why your at it" a custom tackle locker. That would get you going in the right direction for that custom look...... A shinny paint job and removing a boats bowrail is not custom by any means.

problem is new little boats take just as long to build...

as the big ones give or take a couple days.. more $ in the larger size.. bet it starts going backwards soon.. it used to take 900 gallons of fuel for a 54' bert to run home from nassau bahamas.. you can do the math in your head what that travel day alone cost..

so your 65' sportfish drinks 112 gallons an hour .. call the doctor!!!! it's the big one!

I'm wondering if you might be Jay Schanny? If so then hey there. This is Bill Funk. We met up your way Plus talked on the phone. Thanks for the kind words & all your help on the phone. It's been a long wait since then but well worth it. The boat is now almost finished. (next week)!!!

I can't say enough great things about Jim Polatty & his team (Freedom Boatworks) / (now bought out by Blue Water Wanchese). Jim runs Blue Water now. I will do a thread to show the amazing work that Jim & crew has done to finish this boat off for my needs. He has managed to maintain the exceptional level of quality/fit & finish to match that of the builder, Shearline Boats Works.

This was the boat as I purchased it.

A few mid way pics of the new lettering. Also you can see the fold down Green Stick mount & extra rod holders below the belly band.

I am new to posting on this site but have lurked this boating forum for years. Love to read boat stuff just as I know all you guys do. I fish a lot out of OI for (mostly) meat fish. I am setting this rig up for the way we fish. There are very few custom Carolina open back /day boat FB's. I have spent years searching for just the right one. All boats are a trade off but I think due to increasing fuel costs, I will be ok with a bit smaller package.

37 Shearline, twin Yanmar 370 hp. 24knt cruise at 1 NM mile to the gallon. Will start a separate thread once the boat is done.

Thanks again for the interest Jay & Taylor. Hope you guys will come down & help us break her in.
