    Custom Carolina: "Grey Ghost"

I was down at Broad Creek Marina in Wanchese yesterday and saw an express boat in one of the yards with IPS drives. The boat had to be over 50 ft. and was absolutely gorgeous. Had a Tuna Tower that was under construction and saw a couple other things that still had to be done to the boat. I wish I had snapped a picture, as she was truly a work of art. Anyone got any intel on this boat as far as who built her and size? Pictures?

Ritchie Howell's 54. She has a pair of 900hp IPS drives in her.

I should have known it was a Howell, especially by the bow line, or signature "hawk" on this boat. It was the IPS that threw me off. You should see the fairing and overall aesthetics of this rig in person. I guess that's why Ritchie is still building, as they are one of a kind..

    Grey Ghost Howell IPS Boat

I am sure the Canyon Runner guys will chime in, or maybe even Ritchie himself, but I'd be pretty sure that it is Ritchie's 54 IPS boat, but I believe she was finished off outside of Ritchie's shop. She was laid down about two months before our boat, so I saw a lot of what went into her. Very cool, and BIG. Here is the link to the initial build pictures. http://www.ritchiehowell.com/54-expr...ina-yacht.html. I would love to see some pictures of her as she is now. Please post if anyone has them.

This boat is a beauty hands down, and I would love to own a Howell, but I would like to hear what other people think about IPS or Zeus. As a delivery captain I have had the opportunity to run several different models of boats with IPS and Zeus and aside from the maneuverability around the docks I don't think I would want that system. I have found that it takes very little marine growth on the drives to kill performance. All the boats lacked power riding into big seas (torque). One bad wire or a dirty connection to shut the system down. No thank you.
I understand the many benefits of the arrangement but maybe it is just me being old school but I am not sold on this gizmo.

I specifically noticed the lack of torque with IPS. There are two 90 degree directional changes off the engine crank... Good luck to those that have them.
