CUMMINS SERVICING
Does a Cummins marine engine need to be serviced by a qualified Cummins technician (mechanic) or can be done by a regular good motor mechanic (or for that instance anyone working a mechanic on MTU'S in the marine industry)?

I can see it's dangerous for you, but if the government trusts me, maybe you could.
PM frank...aka "seapower" he'll have all the answers you need...

I service my own twin Cummins 6BTA 370s. The engines are still covered by the two year 2000 hr. warranty.
Exactly what are you looking to do for service??? All kinda simple if you know the engines.
If you need assistance in servicing/troubleshooting your Cummins (what model and year are the engine/s)?.....best place to post is on boatdiesel.com

Nabeelah,
The only time you'll need a "Cummin's" guy is for a warranty problem. I will offer you this, use only the good stuff in your service. If you don't cut corner's you more than likely will not have a problem. Using a good "Marine" mechanic, would be my advice. By the way, I've never been to boatdiesel.com. I have only heard about it. I Will Add,
THat if you have any reservation's I would rather use a Cummins dealer. Alway's nice to head a problem off quickly. Cummins dealer's have to jump through more training hoop's and have to prove themselve's more than any other dealer's I am aware of. You can't just buy a truck load of part's and hang a dealer sign over your door to be Cummins. Frank

Frank, the only problems I've come across with "certified/factory trained", call it as you may, Cumins techs or any other "factory" trained diesel tech is that some are a little "weak" in their knowledge of SWAC diesel engines.

BillD,
Sorry you've not had the best luck. Please understand I am speaking my opinion and from my experience. I personaly am not weak in any aspect of marine diesel engine's. I will add that most of my training took place at sea, class room study was a luxury. The only way for anyone in this biz to be proficient is from a crap load of time. Just about the time you think you've got it figured out another problem that you've never even seen will pop up. It's all about commitment to doing each and every job like someone's life could depend on it, it just well may, JMO. Frank

Agreed, I do all my own work with the help of a very good mechanic who can crawl into "tight quarters".
